Description: The Alpandina dishes offered by the Zig Zag Restaurant are the result of a creative culinary fusion deeply rooted in the mountains, where the sun endows foodstuffs with energy and balanced components. The dishes most representative of Alpandino gastronomy arise from a marvellous synthesis of unique time-hallowed ingredients from all over Peru, combined with ancient and modern culinary techniques from the Alps and the Andes. One of the results is our great speciality: Volcanic-Stone-Cooked Meats and Fish. This culinary concept was generated specially by the restaurant's proprietor and Chef, Michel Hediger from Switzerland. During the course of many years in Arequipa, Peru, he has developed an original gastronomic proposal which enables one to savour different kinds of food prepared in an exclusive, healthy and very natural style, so that the restaurant's customers might compare and enjoy the country's different flavours. Located in the Historic Centre of Arequipa, opposite the lovely Plaza San Francisco, the Zig Zag Restaurant, with its impressive cast iron staircase designed by the famous French architect Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, is a unique place to enjoy a gastronomic evening with a difference.

Every restaurant in Arequipa is gorgeous, thanks to the beautiful white volcanic walls of its colonial buildings. But seriously, nothing is better than the candlelight meal at Zig-Zag.

The meats-ostrich, sheep, alpaca, beef (each with a little flag of the animal to recognize them) are all amazing, and the presentation on hot rocks was so fun.

The recommended red wine, Trilogy, from Argentina just made the night that much more perfect.

Beautiful location, fab atmosphere, stunning interior, the friendliest service.. and simply divine food!! Winebar downstairs and up the (Eiffel designed) stairs restaurant - overlooking Plaza San Francisco. The stone cooked meats (beef, alpaca and ostrich) dish is a must have!

We ate at Zig-Zag twice in May, and both on both occassions the food was fabulous. My husband had alpaca, and also ostrich, I stuck to the more conventional foods. All spicy accompaniments were served in separate dishes, so you could choose to add them or not - a nice change to the usual Peruvian habit of covering everything in sauce. The portions were large,
There was a large choice of foods on the menu, and the staff all spoke perfect English to explain the dishes. They were all extremely cheerful and friendly, and you were made to feel at home.
The restaurant has a lower level with bar and spiral staircase. Try to get a table upstairs in the window - we watched jugglers and fire-eaters practising in the park opposite.
