Description: The Alpandina dishes offered by the Zig Zag Restaurant are the result of a creative culinary fusion deeply rooted in the mountains, where the sun endows foodstuffs with energy and balanced components. The dishes most representative of Alpandino gastronomy arise from a marvellous synthesis of unique time-hallowed ingredients from all over Peru, combined with ancient and modern culinary techniques from the Alps and the Andes. One of the results is our great speciality: Volcanic-Stone-Cooked Meats and Fish. This culinary concept was generated specially by the restaurant's proprietor and Chef, Michel Hediger from Switzerland. During the course of many years in Arequipa, Peru, he has developed an original gastronomic proposal which enables one to savour different kinds of food prepared in an exclusive, healthy and very natural style, so that the restaurant's customers might compare and enjoy the country's different flavours. Located in the Historic Centre of Arequipa, opposite the lovely Plaza San Francisco, the Zig Zag Restaurant, with its impressive cast iron staircase designed by the famous French architect Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, is a unique place to enjoy a gastronomic evening with a difference.

I eat here every time I travel to Arequipa (once or twice/year). Can't beat the food. Also the place is lovely. Try to get a table by the window overlooking the plaza!

Service was excellent but food was so so. The trio of meat was tasty but as it comes on top of a hot stone, you literally have to take it off the stone the moment it is served on your table else all the meat will be well done. If you do not want all your clothes and hair to smell like grease, my suggestion is to request for a table downstairs.

Justifiably the No1 restaurant in Arequipa. Food to die for, speedy service, lovely atmosphere. Our meal for 2 came to about £55 for three courses with a small jug of sangria and water. The ever popular trilogy of meats was just heavenly. We were only in Arequipa for two nights and couldn't get a table for our first night so was delighted to get one for our last night. Reserve a table and go!

We had been trying to eat here for the past week but it was always full. Finally made a reservation for last night.

Cons -The service needs a kick in the butt!!!
For such a high caliber eating establishment we were very disappointed in the quality of our waiter!!!

After being seated we waited for 10-15 minutes for a waiter to stop at our table.
Finally my wife grabbed one walking by and asked for a menu.
We had to ask for bread.
When the owner stopped by we asked her for butter which the waiter forgot to bring. .
After we ate our meal we ordered coffee and a desert. The desert came but not the coffee. Why not let the waiter know? By the time we saw the waiter again 15 minutes had passed and the desert was already consumed. Of course the bill had the coffee on it and we had to get our waiter to redo the bill.

By the end of the meal we were so ready to leave the place.

Some of the best food in Peru

Dear Mr. Choulina,

We read your comment on TripAdvisor and are extremely sorry to hear the service on the night you visited Zig Zag was not up to standards, neither yours nor ours.

We understand good service is a big part of what makes dining out enjoyable and strive to have every aspect of our restaurant to be outstanding for every guest. Every time.

Mr. Choulina, I absolutely remember you and our conversation (about?) on August 1st. It was also National Swiss Day. My husband’s Swiss, and we always do something special for our Swiss guests that evening. But never at the expense of our other guests and we’re sorry to learn our staff did not take care of you properly.

We apologize again and invite you back for, as so kindly stated in your comment, “Some of the best food in Peru.” to be accompanied by some of the best attention to service.

This restaurant was recommended by our tour guide, and we were not disappointed. It's about a 5 minute walk from the Santa Catalina Convent. If possible, try to reserve a table ahead of time in hopes that you can get one of the two tables (2-seaters) on the 2nd floor overlooking the park across the street. If not, it's still a great restaurant with a nice atmosphere, friendly servers, and excellent food. We went for a late lunch/early dinner at 3:30 pm, and they had some excellent lunch specials (12-6 pm) that got you a main dish, soup, dessert, and tea/water for 48 nuevos soles (a great deal). My husband had the three meats cooked on stone (excellent), and I had the gnocchi made with Andean potatoes and quinoa (also very good). The quinoa and cheese soup was fantastic as well. I'd highly recommend Zig Zag!
