Description: The Alpandina dishes offered by the Zig Zag Restaurant are the result of a creative culinary fusion deeply rooted in the mountains, where the sun endows foodstuffs with energy and balanced components. The dishes most representative of Alpandino gastronomy arise from a marvellous synthesis of unique time-hallowed ingredients from all over Peru, combined with ancient and modern culinary techniques from the Alps and the Andes. One of the results is our great speciality: Volcanic-Stone-Cooked Meats and Fish. This culinary concept was generated specially by the restaurant's proprietor and Chef, Michel Hediger from Switzerland. During the course of many years in Arequipa, Peru, he has developed an original gastronomic proposal which enables one to savour different kinds of food prepared in an exclusive, healthy and very natural style, so that the restaurant's customers might compare and enjoy the country's different flavours. Located in the Historic Centre of Arequipa, opposite the lovely Plaza San Francisco, the Zig Zag Restaurant, with its impressive cast iron staircase designed by the famous French architect Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, is a unique place to enjoy a gastronomic evening with a difference.

A little more up market, but excellent food served with care, and worth the visit and the high rating.

This restaurant was the perfect ending to our day of exploring Arequipa. We sat at one of the tables upstairs at the window overlooking San Francisco square~ lovely! The food was very beautifully prepared and we enjoyed every morsel. We shared a delicious alpaca appetizer, which was big enough for four people to share. In fact, most of the portions were quite generous. My husband had the antocuchos, grilled skewered beef hearts of which there were eight, which was quite a lot. The service was very good, our server very patient with our attempts to communicate in our poor Spanish. We ordered a bottle of wine that was one of the best values available among all the restaurants where we dined throughout Peru.

We choose to visit Zig Zag after reading reviews on Trip Advisor and were not disappointed! The staff were friendly, the building was lovely, the drinks on offer were great (including some very tasty non-alcoholic cocktails) and the menu choice was outstanding. The alpaca steaks, served on hot lava stones, MUST not be missed.

My family went here for lunch and at first I was a little worried because it was pretty empty and the bathroom was up a winding staircase which was difficult for my Dad's knee. In the end though this was my favorite meal of the trip! They cook meats on volcanic rocks and it really comes out nicely! I tried the three meat combo and of alpaca, pork, and beef and everything was lean, tender, and very tasty. My dad's steak was also perfect and although my mom's lamb chops were a little too rare ( she did ask for medium rare though) she could grill them more herself right on the stone! They were amazingly lean and tender. The dipping sauces they provide were also great. The sides were not quite as stellar, i get a little annoyed when salads are overdressed and the butter was cold and hard, but I am kinda picky. Apparently they have only recently started to serve during lunch hours and at night they are totally packed, so reserve ahead!

This is a bit more expensive than the average Peruvian restaurant but its worth it! It was my first time to try alpaca and it was cooked perfectly, so tender. Service was very professional. Definitely worth treating yourself too!
