“Goregeous and Welcoming Haven Infused With Old World Spanish Charm”
Reviewed December 30, 2010

Tipped off by a recommendation from a lifelong resident of this lovely, little town, we were enchanted by this beautiful, boutique hotel in Cuenca. The hotel radiates an Old World Spanish charm, complete with interior courtyard and fountain. Each room has its own unique style; they are spacious and comfortable. In the back of the hotel, an equally enchanting garden, in which drinks and snacks are served throughout the day, awaits the guests. One of the nicest features is upstairs on the second floor; a sprawling 'en suite' arrangement of sitting rooms and library beckons travelers to relax and chat, or to pull out a favorite book and get absorbed in its pages. The staff could not be more friendly or helpful, nor the pricing more attractive. Perhaps the crowning glory: turn down service includes warm water bottles tucked into the foot of the bed to ward off even the slightest chill that might come from the fresh evening air. (Cuenca is at 8,000 feet altitude - perfect for the equator!) We would come back here in a heartbeat.

We had a lovely room, accomodations are elegant, staff is super attentive. The chef Clayton is amazing and the food superb. It is near the old part of town but not so near that the traffic is a problem. It was a perfect stay and would go back in a heartbeat!

can't beat this hotel if you are staying in cuenca. perfect location, best accommodations (that you can find anywhere), a knowledgeable and helpful staff and a restaurant where you can get a needed taste of home when you want it most. have manuel make you one of his famous martinis. the colorful all day christmas eve parade (passing in front of the hotel) celebrating the child traveler will melt a hardened heart .

This place is incredible. We stayed for 3 days, walked everywhere, had some awesome food around town and the staff was so great for us and our 3 children. They even arranged to have a cab take us to a soccer field in town to kick it around with the kids.

This may be the most elegant and beautiful boutique hotel I have ever seen. The colonial decor and finishings were spectacular, and the hotel's stay ensured we were attended to in every possible way.

If you do not watch your steps, you are likely to step on an antique in this stunning hotel. It should not even be called a hotel... how about a posada or a haveli? The outside of the hotel is unassuming unless you crane your neck and look at the wrought iron embellishments, the flags and the ornate work. But step inside, and you are in a very different world from the street outside. The place oozes charm and elegance and quiet... except.....

I was given Room 106 which is a single right off the main hall. It was small with a strange bathroom ( the underside of the stairs leading to the 2nd floor were in the bathroom and made an alcove for storing luggage). However, it was cramped with amenities and curios and artifacts and a most comfortable bed that was made even more comfortable with the hot bottle tucked inside the covers during tirndown service in the night. However I could not sleep! The room had a window that opened into the hall that also functioned as a lobby and as a passage for all guests to and from the restaurant. Since there was no ventilation in the room except to keep the window open, it was impossible to sleep with all the conversations going on outside. The noise persisted even if I closed the window (it was cool enough that I did not need the air). Botton line, do not take Room 106 under any circumstances. Even if you are solo, spend a little extra to ask for a larger room or use your charm on the wonderful staff at the front desk to ask for an upgrade.

Not only was this a beautiful refurbished colonial hotel but the staff was fabulous. We stayed in a spacious suite and each evening the maid brought hot water bottles to keep us warm in bed. The furnishings and surroundings in the room and especially the lobby and restaurant were soothing and elegant. Each morning we had a great breakfast to start the day - make sure you have dinner at the hotel, inexpensive and the chef is quite talented. Tea in the lobby, listening to the pianist or sound of the water fountain was a perfect way to end the afternoon. When we left to fly back to the states we stayed overnight in Quito for the night. I realized I left our camera in the taxi from Mansion Alcazar to the Cuenca airport. I e-mailed the hotel, the camera was found in the taxi and Isabel, the manager sent it on the next plane to Quito. Our camera was back in our hands by noon the next day with plenty of time before flying back to the states. Now that is service! Thank you Isabel and your staff - you're the best! Looking forward to our next visit.
