“A beautiful oasis”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2007

My husband, five year old daughter and I stayed here in late June. We were taken with the images and descriptions here on Trip Advisor and were not disappointed. Do as others have recommended and book a specific room--we stayed in the Angel Room and were delighted. Not only was the suite enormous with a lovely view of the beautiful garden, but there were all sorts of extra touches that made us feel like royalty (each night there were hot water bottles tucked into our beds, etc). We ate in the hotel restaurant and it was by far the best meal we had in Cuenca. The setting was wonderful, as well--try to get a table in the little glass enclosure, if possible. Staff was wonderful and very helpful, as well. And breakfasts were ample--dishes made to order, as well as a small buffet of cold staples. We agreed that this was one of the nicest places we have stayed.

The hotel staff told us that the hotel had just purchased the property behind the hotel and that they were planning to build new additional rooms, a pool and spa--hard to imagine that the place can get any better than it already is, but these additions will add considerably to what is an already lovely place! Can't wait to go back!

Mansion Alcazar is a slice of heaven! The best and most gorgeous hotel in Cuenca (when passing, I "check-out" others) . The staff was attentive, helpful and very professional, while at the same time fun-loving. The garden is beautiful and the food is top-class. I really want the CD list played in their bar!

My only comment would be that the upstair single rooms are more than dark, without outside windows, extremely cramp and not desirable. I upgraded to a suite ($38 more per night) that was a dream.

I believe the fault with my booking (for the premium price I paid my travel company) was as a result of someone making an extra $ "spread." Especially as a single traveler, I would never accept a room (unless booking a specific room in advance) or letting your guide disappear until you have seen the room, and believe you are receiving what you paid for. Also, in advance request from your travel company the exact cost of the room, in case you need to discuss with the front desk about the quality of your room. Almost all hotels state room rates at the front desk once there.

Another big hint: Whenever I stated the room number I wanted, I was thrilled and it cost me less. And when the room number was not stated ... the room was probably the worst in the house.

  • Liked — Uniqueness, charm, colonial an avangaurd decor, music, garden, location, staff, ...
  • Disliked — Single- dark, cave-like, more than cramp single rooms - no exterior windows

What a lovely hotel!

I stayed here with my parents and sisters and had a wonderful time. The hotel has been lovingly restored and is beautifully furnished with real style. The quality of the fittings and furnishings are very high and it has a lovely ambience. Some of the rooms are noisier then others as they are on the ground floor, but on the whole the hotel is peaceful, so we didn't find that to be a problem. Each room is individually decorated, and they put hot water bottles in your bed for the night. There is also a lovely restaurant, and a beautiful little garden out the back with hummingbirds and flowers. A thoroughly welcome retreat from the bustle of the city which was really high quality.

  • Liked — the peaceful ambience and beautiful furnishings
  • Disliked — nothing really, but the location is ok, rather than fantastic

We stayed at the Mansion Alcazar, a meticulously restored mansion right in the historic downtown, for two nights and loved every minute of it. A beautiful lobby, excellent bar/lounge (Manuel can make any drink you can think of), nice rooms, excellent breakfast, a decent restaurant, and an attentive and well-trained staff. We wouldn't think of going anywhere else when we return to Cuenca.

My wife and I stayed two nights. Authentic spanish-style South American architecture with rooms on two floors that open to a large covered courtyard. All rooms have authentic period furnishing, upscale marble bathrooms, cable TV and phones. Lounge rooms full of spanish style 19th century art. Service is awsome, meals are fantastic, and the staff is first class. Just blocks away from city central park, flower market and open-air market, and fantastic clothing and leather shops on all nearby streets.

Mansion Alcazar is a quiet oasis of sophistication and service. Unfortunately we only stayed the one night, but the level of service and attendance was impeccable. With only 14 rooms set around an enclosed quadrangle personal service is guaranteed.
Our bathrobes had been laid out on our bed and scattered with rose petals

Both the bedrooms and public rooms are furnished with antique style furniture and have a “grand” feeling to them.

You have the choice of having an aperitif in the bar or Champagne Lounge which is on the first floor. Our pre-dinner drinks were served with a smile. The food is excellent and service at dinner was first-rate.

I’ll be back some day.
