“Wonderfully stylish”
Reviewed March 8, 2014 via mobile

In a fabulous colonial building, the Alcazar is so beautiful. The rooms in the main building are stylish but slightly small, but the modern rooms through the garden are larger and stunning with lovely design details and antiques (though we needed to ask for extra heaters in August). The garden is gorgeous and a great place to watch humming birds. The restaurant is slightly too international and fancy, but good quality and a class above most places in Cuenca. Really lovely place to stay.

This is a very charming old hotel on one of the main drags in Cuenca. Staff is reasonably efficient but not exactly anticipating your every need. Restaurant is lovely, overlooking the beautiful garden, but food is rather bland and unexciting. Breakfast is adequate, nothing more. My first floor, single room was tiny and faced the beautiful (but loud) indoor courtyard. Strange double window by my bed opened up to every passing person in the hotel. Obviously kept curtains drawn my entire stay. Room has safe, TV (which I never could get to operate. Certain it worked, just didn't have the time or inclination to fuss with it.) Wi-fi and toiletries. Nice shower. Room was always cold however. Ask front desk for rollaway heater. Hot water bottles in the bed at night are a nice touch. Used the spa one time - had a great deep tissue massage. Very nice! All in all; nice, clean, safe. Front door locked at all times - ring bell for entry.

Room Tip: Rooms facing interior courtyard are noisy. Garden rooms further back, less so.

Lovely Colonial hotel, maybe the nicest in town. Greeted with greatly appreciated small glasses of Amaretto when we arrived, after driving 8 hours through the Andes from Quito because our flight was cancelled due to volcanic eruption. Couldn't find a bellman, but guess they focused on the drink instead, which was ok! Had a lovely interior room with a canopy bed in the main building, first floor. While room was very nice, walls did seem a bit thin and second floor would probably be best, as with any old hotel with wood floors. Hot water bottles were put in our bed at night, nice touch. Tons of very hot water, and amazingly strong water pressure. Restaurant was sometimes very good (pesto pasta) but at breakfast (included) some bread a bit stale.
Some of the desk personnel are cold and impersonal for a nice boutique hotel, but Mariska (?) was incredibly helpful when the Tunguraha volcanic eruption caused problems again with our air resos. We had asked her to call the airline to confirm our flights were running and airports open. She really took control and made a number of phone calls on our behalf to sort out a problem, even before she told us she had discovered we had a problem! Between her and Catalina at Ecuadorian Tours (of Quito), they solved our problem. FYI, Ecuadorian Tours is EXCELLENT, and less expensive than Metropolitan Tours on some things we compared. They are located near the Hilton Colon, and provided Leo, driver/guide with excellent English, well educated, knowledgable and very accommodating, nice, and a safe driver who really went above and beyond to help us when we had other volcano issues earlier. OK, back to the hotel, but had to plug Ecuadorian Tours, and Leo, since they are so good!
VERY loud piano player in the afternoon was absolutely pounding out "Left My Heart in SF" and the like, I had to ask the desk to ask him to tone it down, seemed like he and the female who was trying to sing along thought it was his living room or a huge venue, not a lovely and serene small hotel lobby/sitting area. IMHO, they should stop the piano gig, music choices and volume didn't fit the elegant space. Looked in the Sta Lucia Hotel, as it seemed to be 'THE" place we heard about but was booked, and it didn't compare visually to the lovely Mansion. Don't know for sure, but I think the Garden Rooms may not be as nice, though the garden is pleasant for coffee or bird watching in the morning, very quiet and relaxing. Well located, just a few blocks from the Plaza.

Room Tip: Second floor interior?

Since we live here, some of us decided to have a dinner here for Christmas. Have to say it is absolutely the most beautiful hotel in Cuenca, with gardens to match! The dinner was pre-fixed n had a wonderful menu, however the portions were very small, and the service was not relaxed, as they served everything within an hour! Might add it was very expensive too. Next year we are going to the beach for a week instead. Employees wanted to be home with their families, it was obvious.

We enjoyed very much staying 3 nights in this colonial housel, full of atmosphere and beautifully decorated. The rooms (suites) were nice but more very spacious, overlooking a luxurious garden, we only regretted the temperature was so cold inside the rooms (we would go into our bed to read…). Breakfast was good.

We spent 2 nights in late October and are still talking about the stay. Our room was well appointed, unfortunately sound proof to the next room was virtually non existent. We conveyed it to the front desk and can only hope that management will find a solution to it., and our room was on the side of the public parking. It seems that in all of South America there is only one type of car alarm and it appears it is activated at any time for no good reason. We had the pleasure of listening to it during siesta time. The parking lot closes at 10PM. Considering that we were in a town center noise has to be accepted, especially in South America., Otherwise our stay was wonderful. We had lunch both days in the restaurant and were not disappointed. We definitely would come back, even with car alarm, but we would ask for another room.

This is a lovely boutique hotel in a former colonial residence a short distance from the main square. It has 11 rooms and 3 garden suites. I loved my spacious garden suite, #303 with large king bed, sitting area and lovely bath. The lobby is formal and elegant with lovely antiques and the Casa Alonso restaurant is very attractive with excellent food is a good choice to dine in town. There is a nice breakfast buffet as well. There is a small dining room with outdoor seating. There is a bar in the front of the hotel and tea is available on a self-serve basis each afternoon in the lobby.
