Some pretty fascinating exhibits and dioramas about the various peoples who have lived in Ecuador . Combine that with the ruins and gardens outside and you have a worthy afternoon visit.

The museum is nice, but the amazing part is the large outdoor archeological complex. And admission is FREE! I went here three times during my week in Cuenca, because it's so peaceful (minus the cars whizzing by on the adjoining road) and mystical.

There are lots of cool plants being tended, and of course there are lamas and alpacas. There are some very sad birds in cages, if that's your thing. But the original stonework of the complex is the main attraction, and it's very cool to sit among the stonework and chill out.

This is probably the best museum in Cuenca and encompasses so much to do. First you start with the museum on 2 to 3 floors (depending on the exhibitions at the time) focusing on Pre-Colombian artifacts found in Ecuador. Then, you venture out the back door of the museum for a walk through the Incan ruins. These slope down a hillside and also give you great views of Cuenca neighborhoods below you. You then can descend a path to walk through gardens, aviaries and see llamas. At the end of your visit here, you climb a stairway to return to the street via the museum.

The premier museum of Cuenca, Pumapungo Museo houses visiting collections by contemporary artist as well as a small permanent collection, cultural exhibits, a collection of Ecuadorian currencies, the access to the Pumapungo Inca ruins. Additionally it contains a theater used for lectures, films and musical events.

Indeed world class and I would have given it 5 stars if it hadn't been full of school children so you had to wait too long to see the exhibits. They also created a background of noise that followed you throughout. The museum should limit the number of school groups that can be there at any one time!
The pieces on display are intriguing and beautiful. Try to read up on the history a bit before going.
In my opinion there is no good reason to forbid visitors from taking photos and is extremely disappointing and annoying.

A great way to learn about the history of Cuenca and the valley's history from pre-colonial to the present day.
