“Creaky Floors”
Reviewed June 4, 2007

This hotel is superficially attractive and is in the middle of town. However there are problems. The floor boards in the rooms and corridors have become detached from the supporting beams. That means that if you walk anywhere there is an explosion of creaks and moans from the floor. In the middle of the night I went to the bathroom and my wife sat bolt upright thinking that someone had been shot in the room.

I and my wife also ate at the resteraunt. The beer was warm, there was only one bottle of cold white whine and the food was similiar to that you would get at work cafateria. (Plain overcooked uninteresting)

The plumbing also cannot fit toilet paper. Bins are provided in the rooms for the used toilet paper but they do not have lids so that towards the end of the day the bathroom smells like a Indian public toilet.

  • Liked — No danger of theft with the floor making so much noise
  • Disliked — The resteraunt

A beautiful boutique hotel, but.......there is a real problem with sound. We stayed for several nights in March and found the hotel charming during the day. It has an enchanting interior courtyard old Spanish style in the old colonial section of the city.
You can walk to nearly all the typical tourist attractions.

But...beware. At night those who drink and like to make lots of noise use the interior courtyard for their party time. Sound carries in the hotel because all rooms face the interior courtyard. You can actually hear a quiet conversation in an upstairs corner room with the door closed and in bed. You can imagine what it is like when the borrachos take over. The staff allowed the party to go on until after midnight!! Believe me you will not sleep with that level of noise outside your room.

We tactfully registered our complaints with management the folowing day, but.....beware of the noise issues. Otherwise a very pleasant stay with excellent service by staff.

  • Liked — Charming and beautfil interior, pleasant staff.
  • Disliked — Serious noise issues not controlled by hotel staff.

The Santa Lucia is an elegantly restored colonial building in Cuenca. Central location, so easy to walk anywhere in the old city. Pleasant and helpful staff. The interior courtyard, with glass ceiling, second story balconies, and a huge tree is lovely and also functions as a restaurant. The attached street-front cafe-restaurant is cozy, with attractive murals on the walls. Although we didn't have an inner balcony room (at first a disappointment) our third floor room below the roof (213) was large with a high ceiling and exposed beams. Best thing about it was how quiet it was - overlooked a quiet parking lot, so no street noise or restaurant noise. Because of the stairs and no elevator, not a place for people with physical restrictions.

Feel colonial in colonial Ecuador! I stayed here a couple of nights in a two-story suite with my mother and girlfriend. The location is unbeatable, the price is very high, but if you like to stay in unique places, this is really it! The hotel itself is an architectural sight worth seeing! Staff was very polite, helpful and professional.

This is an old colonial style house now hotel and is really beautiful. Small and personal, right in the centre of Cuenca. Food was very good too. Some said their rooms were too hot, but mine was fine. Big room with old dark furniture, which was all in character. Good sized bathroom too. Had trouble stopping the shower from leaking - needed someone to shut you in for the door to be a tight fit, fine if you have a companion... Some staff speak English - the chef spoke better English than some of the waiting staff, but that just adds interest! Lovely, and highly recommended.
