“Pretty good time at a wonderful place.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 3, 2013

The location is perfect, with just one block from the main square me and my friends went walking all over awesome old town. As a my opinion the best place to go for a great view of all the city is "turi" and you also have a church there, not as nice as the "Cathedral" but pretty good to go. The best restaurant we visit was for big the main restaurant at the "St Lucia's" patio, with an elegant and classy atmosphere we think "this will be expensive" but the price was very ok and the selection was pretty tentative for our good luck the metre convince me so my plate was just excellent. In conclusion this hotel really worth a visit and you better want to stay and taste the fine cuisine of Ecuador.

We stayed at the Santa Lucia in April 2013 and thought it was lovely. A great deal of thought (or a clever interior designer!) has gone into the decor which has lots of lovely touches in the public areas. The bedrooms have little or no natural light which is a disadvantage for some but on learning more about the style of building in Cuenca we realised that this is typical of the way they do things. Only snags were that we were desperate to have some laundry done and this service is not available on Sundays, and the bar was closed because there is some regulation or other that says you can't serve alcohol on a Sunday.

Firstly in praise of the hotel it is an excellent location in the centre of Cuenca,we felt perfectly safe wandering around this part of the City at night .We had one meal in the hotel which was ok-the restaurant is in the central lobby area and was quite cold whenever the main doors were opened .
However on the negative front we were not impressed with the rooms .We were initially offered a room on the first (ground ) floor directly behind the restaurant area .It had no external window -the window was a curtained window in to the lobby area and the room was pitch black .After a bit of a debate with the front desk we were offered 2 other rooms .One was 2 rooms along from the first one and was almost as dark .The other was on the 3rd floor and was like a Parisian's artists garrett room ! in the end we took it because there was no other choice .The manager showing me the room did point out that there was a public car park to the rear but as the following day was Sunday it wouldn't be open .That was fine-luckily we were up reasonably early on Monday mainly because the endless beeping of car alarms served as an early morning call .
My reaction to reading a review like this would be "but didn't you realise this is a former colonial home and not a modern Hilton ? " To be fair we did a City tour and visited a number of similar style hotels with a central courtyard roofed over all of which were bathed in light and very pleasant .The Santa Lucia is very dark inside mainly due to the hanging awnings which i found quite a depressing experience

Room Tip: If you are relaxed about lack of light and want an old style colonial experience this may be th eone...

Dear Guest,

Thanks for your feedback, we appreciate your comments and thank you for your patience, due the location of the Hotel we are in the middle of a busy area so noise is a issue, because of that we are changing windows to reduce noise. The house were the hotel works its a 150 years old so the architecture that we have preserved doesn't let a lot of light in the building. We hope you can stay with us in the future and see the changes that we are doing.

Remember that this is you house in Cuenca and we are always at your service.

Best Regards,

Cornelio Vintimilla

The location of the hotel in the old town was great with the main square being only one block away. The colonial architecture made this feel very special. Our room overlooked the central patio and we were worried that the noise from this might intrude but the little noise there was did not disturb us at all. The twin weds were huge. Each being a bit smaller than a standard UK double. Breakfasts were average with a limited selection of cereals and fruit but we had been spoiled at our last stop so maybe I'm being too critical. A hotel worth a visit even if it is just to sample the unique architecture.

Room Tip: All the rooms we saw look onto the central patio so be prepared for some noise from diners

We stayed here 2 nights. The rooms were fine - although the king size bed was probably the smallest we had but the welcome was great - Giovanny made us feel special and had excellent English. The food was really good and the wine (Ecuadorian and recommended by Giovanny) was really good value for money. My wife's sandals broke and they managed to direct us to a repairer who fixed them within 1 hoiur at a cost of .............$1. I would definitely recommend the hotel- great value for money and 2 minutes walk to both cathedrals. Historic public spaces - lounge etc

The location of the hotel is great and the hotel itself is very nice too with its inner patio and colonial architecture.
Our room was quite small and the bed bed was too small for two people. Our friends had rooms close to the kitchen and the patio and had trouble sleeping because of the noise and the heat. We did not have that problem on the third floor. Careful there is no elevator which might be a problem for some people. We had an apritif and dinner at the hotel and the service was insanely slow and not very good. The food was ok but nothing special.
It is a nice place to stay but don't expect too much from it.

The location is excellent, in the centre of Cuenca. The hotel looks lovely as you walk in. Rooms are set around an indoor couryard with lovely furnishings, wooden floors with carpets and rugs and ornaments dotted around. It all looks very grand. A large room for reading or relaxing in with books and magazines on the tables.

Then it all goes downhill. We had asked for a room at the back and were given room 207. The room itself was very nice with a large double bed. There was an overpowering smell of air freshener and we found that it was plugged in, in the bathroom. The next day it had disappeared but there wasn't an unpleasant smell in there for it to mask.

We were getting ready to go out when my husband stepped on some broken glass on the carpet and cut his foot. He found other small pieces which he picked up. On our way out, we stopped at reception to tell them and ask that the room be cleaned. When we got back it obviously hadn't been done as a mat on the floor hadn't been moved and they didn't know if the glass was there or somewhere else. Maybe they had been in and just looked for some large pieces of glass. This meant that we couldn't walk round in our bare feet. The following day with the sun shining in, we could see small slivers of glass in the carpet and we asked again for it to be cleaned. This time we did see them in there with a vacuum cleaner.

The room was quiet except we kept hearing a lift going up and down, right next to our room. We had a look round but there wasn't a guest lift so we assumed that it was a service lift. We heard it each night about 3am then it started again after 5am.

Breakfast is set in a small room with not a great selection. Coffee and tea is served to you by a waiter. Trying to attract his attention for a refill is difficult The staff are most unfriendly, never speak or smile.
