This was a first time experience that continued to get better and better. Close to delicious food, local & non local. Highly recommend the rental, as the owner is very gracious...flowers to welcome the guest. Doesn't get any better than that ! TV, fridge, heater to take away the chill, and fridge to keep wine & leftovers. Even tho it was o
In city, it was very secluded, safe & quiet.

“Perfect location, wonderful apartment, ideal host”

17 years ago I lived in Cuenca. For the first visit back my wife and I stayed at this studio flat, and we want to return. Stuart is a rare host. Beyond being very friendly and very skilled, he runs an excellent place and knows the city, region and country very well indeed. The place is well designed, aesthetically pleasing and fits well with the style of Cuenca's old town. Four apartments available for rent are placed on two sides of a beautiful, quiet patio. When we arrived we found not only Stuart waiting for us, but the apartment was stocked with fresh fruit and flowers. The location is perfect, in the middle of Cuenca's old town with a large variety of restaurants suiting almost any taste within easy walking distance (starting with two excellent restaurants next door, one Italian and one Colombian)

Being jetlagged from the trip from Europe it was also wonderfully quiet, even when the street outside was busy. The bed was comfortable and beyond what we expected, as illustrated by the blankets: Thick high quality alpaca wool. Warm and not itchy at all. Turns out Stuart also has an alpaca farm/wildlife preserve in the Cañar province, from whence he gets high quality alpaca wool. The beds' blankets are made from this, and we were fortunate enough to get to buy both an alpaca blanket from him as well as alpaca yarn, which my wife Kelly (an avid knitter) praises.
The beds were great, and in addition it is worth mentioning that the showers have hot water on-demand. Therefore you are very unlikely to run out of hot water even if you take long showers. This (good beds and long, hot showers) is something we really appreciated: A true luxury after a long journey.

We look forward to the next opportunity we have to travel back to stay at one of these apartments and meet Stuart with family again.

“A piece of heaven”

This beautiful place in old Cuenca was a perfect location for everything. As soon as my daughter and I stepped inside the charming and beautiful courtyard everything in us completely relaxed. It was that same feeling every time we 'came home' after a day out. We could walk everywhere and there were very good restaurants close by -- I think 8 to 10 on our street alone. It was a stone's throw to the beautiful river and markets. Everyone we met at our rental was kind and accommodating and the apartment we had was quite lovely on the second floor over looking the courtyard.

“A Nice Place in a Cool District”
Reviewed December 2, 2014 for a stay in November 2014

This was the second of 2 places we rented for a week in Cuenca. Each of the places had strong points.
Positives for this rental:
Good kitchen and storage
Nicely finished interior
Excellent, fluently English speaking owner/manager willing to offer invaluable tips on the area
nice balcony and a quiet street
Comfortable bed
Plenty of hot water
no-charge washing machine/drier

Negative points
Our unit got very little sun and consequently was uncomfortably cool at night. A simple electric fan heater would have been helpful. We resorted to turning on the cook stove sometimes but the warm air went upstairs and there was no ceiling fan to circulate it.
The under-counter fridge was quite small for people who want to buy and cook their own food.
We highly recommend this place. It is mere steps away from several good restaurants and in an excellent district close to the parks and river. If only it wasn't chilly at night.

“Absolutely Wonderful”

If you want a place to stay that is in the old town of Cuenca this is an excellent choice. The best part of staying here are the owners. They went above and beyond to make our stay easy and comfortable. The apartment was clean, modern, comfortable, convenient and affordable. There is a common laundry room for all tenants that is really nice to have when you've been traveling for some time. There is a great coffee place called Goza just a short half block away. You can walk to the main plaza "Parque Calderon" and the beautiful cathedral in 10 minutes. The wonderful produce/meat market 10 de Agosto is a 10 minute walk. The Tomebamba river is just a couple blocks away and from there where there are beautiful walking paths. Down the steps you can walk to the super market in about 15 minutes. The only drawbacks: It is on a relatively busy street, (though every street in Cuenca is a busy street), but once you enter the courtyard you are sheltered in an oasis from the hustle and bustle. On the same block and across the street are many little cafes and bars. On the weekend there was lots of "bar activity" and noise. The first two nights there was police activity right in front of the entrance. But we didn't feel particularly unsafe or in danger. We unlocked the entrance and walked in to the courtyard as the police had a guy up against the wall. Same thing happened the second night we were there. There is a church school a half block up that starts clanging its bells at 5:00am, and continues every half hour or so. We got kind of used to it after a couple of days.
Overall this is a GREAT place to stay and we will be back.

“A little bit of Heaven in downtown Cuenca”
Reviewed October 6, 2014 for a stay in October 2014

Pumamaqui is a unique experience in traveling. This can't be called a hotel since there are only 4 rooms, but each room is like experiencing a little of Ecuador's culture without ever leaving your room. Our room is really an efficiency apartment with lots of space, and on its own private stair case overlooking the central courtyard. The kitchen and dining area are well equipped and modern, the bed is comfortable, the bath is private and very functional. Its a wonderful place to stay if you're lucky enough to reserve a room. The only downside is the sound of Karaoke singing (?) coming from next door, but that's only on the weekend.
From the moment Stu met us at the door, he made extra efforts to make us feel very much at home, ensuring that we knew what we needed and had everything we wanted. This is the only place I want to stay whenever I come to Cuenca.

Perfect location in the historic section of Cuenca for walking and exploring; close to the river Tomebamba and museums and historic churches, a variety of eateries next door and across the street, clean and comfortable housing, kind attentive host. We traveled light knowing there would be a washer and dryer for use on site.
