“Beautiful restaurant, fantastic service, decidedly average food.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2014

The food really let down our visit to Oliveto. We received a lovely warm welcome, chose a nice table in the attractive restaurant, with great opera music playing and were quickly served by the young waiter (who remained attentive and friendly throughout). The wine we ordered was delicious, however, the rest of the evening went downhill when the food started to arrive! This restaurant has got lots of things right. However they have not quite managed the most important thing...the food!

The bread that arrived at the table was stodgy yet also stale (the dips were very good though). Our starters of deep fried mozeralla and calamari were and our mains of lobster ravioli and aubergine were bland, way too big and, again, stodgy. We ended up leaving fairly sick which was such a shame as this restaurant has a huge amount of potential if they can produce better food.

“Great view, slow service, top end on cost.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2014

We booked in advance and reserved a balcony table for New Year's Eve. While waiting for our friends to arrive, some other friends turned up, without a booking, and were given our table, and we were seated further back....poor management in my opinion.

The service was very slow, surprisingly as the restaurant was only half full, the meals were good, but sparing in quantity. When it came time for dessert, they only had one item left, it was 8 pm.......really.

While the cost was low by U.S. standards, it was the most expensive meal we had in Cuenca, and far from the best.

“I really wanted to like this lovely restaurant but...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2014

This place is quite beautiful and has a most lovely view of the Tomebamba river and Cuenca. Unfortunately, our meals were not great. I had a chicken dish with potatoes. The chicken was dry and tasteless and the potatoes were undercooked. My husband's chicken with mushrooms, onions and peppers was mediocre at best. Not horrible but we had higher hopes for this place. One nice thing I can say is that the portion size was very generous.

Service was ok. View spectacular. We would not return as there are much better Italian restaurants in Cuenca.

“Best Italian Food in Cuenca”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 17, 2013

I’d like to heartily recommend the exquisite authentic Italian food of Oliveto Ristorante. A family owned restaurant located on Calle Larga just off Luis Cordero.

We are New York expats living in Cuenca. On our first experience at Oliveto in September 2013, I had their Filet Mignon Special with prawns in a brandy sauce; and my wife had their Grilled Salmon Special in a squid ink sauce. Both served with potatoes and vegetables. My Filet Mignon was cooked to perfection and the prawns in brandy sauce were amazing. For us it was some of the finest Italian food that we have ever eaten. We asked our waiter to please let the chef know how much we enjoyed his cooking. To our surprise the chef/owner Gaston Alvarado came out of the kitchen and directly to our table.

Chef Gaston gave us a grand tour of his restaurant, including the kitchen and cooking equipment of which he is very proud, having imported all of it from New York. The kitchen was spotless and all stainless steel everywhere. Chef Gaston told us that every morning he makes his own fresh sauces, pastas and raviolis for the day. He told us that he grew up in Cuenca but left Ecuador for the US to work in New York City as a chef for the past 27 years. His goal was to open up the finest Italian restaurant in his homeland in Cuenca. After frequenting OLIVETO many times since then, I can tell you that the food is consistently great. Whether it’s pasta, sea food, chicken, beef or lamb, chef Gaston cooks and flavors it to perfection.
When you first walk into Oliveto, to the left is a showcase of delicious desserts for patrons, and also for sale. And for those expats wondering where to get a wedge of authentic Parmigian cheese for your own home cooking, look no further, as wedges of Parmigian cheese are available for sale at the dessert counter.

On the way to the main dining room there is an entire wall covered in live greenery, followed by an entire room dedicated to an extensive collection of fine wines to compliment any meal. The layout and ambiance of the main dining room makes you feel like you are dining in Italy, as the walls are covered with murals of the Italian countryside, with ceilings made of bamboo. This, together with the warm lighting during the evening and beautiful Italian music makes for a very romantic and grand evening with family, friends, and loved ones. And soon to be completed will be an extension to OLIVETO complete with a bar and additional seating with a breathtaking view of the Tomebomba River.

Fabulous freshly made authentic Italian food. Excellent service. Great location overlooking the Tomebomba river. Oliveto Ristorante is a complete and unique dining experience. What more could you ask for! But don’t just take our word for it. If you love Italian food, check it out for yourself!

“How Quaint!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 16, 2013

The four of us discovered this lovely little Italian restaurant on Calle Larga one day and went back in the evening for dinner. We were not disappointed! Even on the outside it looks great and inside the dining room was perfect (large wine cellar to view). They were renovating a large portion on the back that overlooks the river, so when we go back we will definitely go there to see the outdoor patio. Even with our little Spanish, the staff were superb and we were able to communicate just fine. Great food, well prepared and well presented.
