“Pampered at Casa de las Rosas”
Reviewed July 6, 2014

My sister niece and I stayed at Casa de las Rosas in July 2013. We had a lovely stay. The room was simple, but comfortable with some nice touches: rose petals on the bed when we arrived, hot water bottles provided each night. Our room had a king-sized bed and a twin, so we had plenty of room for the 3 of us. The breakfast was lovely and you can order an egg if you like. Plenty of coffee. While it was a little off the main road, we had no trouble walking to all the sights, and taxis were inexpensive if we chose to use them.
The hosts (Maria & ?) were available and knowledgeable.

I was a bit disappointed when we arrived at Casa de las Rosas from the airport. I selected this hotel based on Trip Advisor's reviews and ranking. The location of the hotel is not optimal, it is located in a busy commercial area and 6-10 blocks from the historic area. The accommodations were very basic but comfortable for a one night stay. The highlight was the service provided by the staff: courteous and friendly.

We booked a double room for 9 nights. We were shown a room that was larger than a double with a kitchenette. After 6 nights, upon returning from dinner, the lobby was full of people and bags. We were told in front of everyone that we needed to pack our bags and move to another room immediately because these peole had a reservation. Well so did we and we were completely unpacked in the room. We were less than pleased. We were moved to a room with exactly three pieces of furniture, two beds and one straight back chair. Not a closet, shelf, table, nightstand,,.,, if you had a cup of coffee you had to place it on the floor between sips. Horrible. Windows into the hall had little curtain insufficient to keep out the hall lights. The bathroom had a window into the hallway. The upper part of which kept opening creating a total lack of privacy in the bathroom. Unfortunate for us as well as the other guests. If we had been shown the awful Verde Room right off we would have left the hotel and never stayed there. We tried to find something for the last 2 nights but could not find accommodations. The walk to the center of town is about 8 blocks. I would try for something closer to the center as we made several trips a day to the parque Calderon and were weary by evening. My advice book elsewhere. In Quito we stayed at two hotels, one less expensive that was so comfortable and well appointed! The website for Casa de las Rosas says it has a restaurant. It does not. It has a breakfast room. Hardly a restaurant. Book elsewhere. Their people skills need work. Nice folks but we should have been told on arrival they knew they were going to move us and they should not have waited till 9 pm and in front of the whole hotel to boot us out of our room. One gentleman had reasonable English but mose of the staff and virtually no English. My poor Spanish was essential there. The ladies in the kitchen, especially Sonja, were just a treat. One bright star in the otherwise awful experience.

Room Tip: Avoid the Verde Room (they may have chanaged the name after my review) at all costs and their is a m...

Don't know how things become top rated in Cuenca (andI haven't stayed elsewhere her) but Las Rosas is a very comfortable and hospitable quite small hotel that is reasonably priced. At a (walkable) distance from the main historical attractions & better eateries, rooms are big and cheerful and breakfast is well done. Place is well kept and staff are young and variable over the days but eager to help you arrange travel, identify places to eat etc. (Sensitive folk note: street facing rooms do get street noise and sounds travel across rooms depending on guest behaviors.) Bookings.com offers good rates

Stayed for 10 nights and felt like it was home away from home. All the staff were helpful and genuine. Thank you so much Fernanda, Sonja, Diego, Flabio and Lucia (forgive my spelling). They will give you any help you need.

Calle Largo has a lot of museums and cafes and runs beside the Tomebamba river. Great area to walk.

After a day running around town it was good to come back to a comfortable place where you do not have to hide in your room. The sitting areas were great to talk to other guests, catch up on your email etc. We ordered pizza a couple of nights and they set up a table for us with plates, glasses etc....just like home. Breakfast set out is continental style but once you start eating it they will come and ask you how you want your eggs and bacon. The front living room always has hot water for tea or coffee with fruit and a cake.

Location is within walking distance of everything - you need good walking shoes. In the evening get a taxi back to the hotel.

Taxes...cheap.....$3 was the most we paid. The hotel will call the taxi for you. Same day laundry available at the hotel for $5 per bag. Clean, comfortable room, wonderful people, OK location, great recommendations on things to do and see as well as places to eat. The staff will get as involved with you as you want. Flabio speaks excellent English and comes in at 6pm. If you go to Ingapirca go by taxi or bus! The tours wanted $55 per person and there were 4 of us. We got a taxi from 9am to around 5pm and it cost us $50 total. Well worth the visit.

If you are on a scouting trip check out Roux restaurant - owned by a nice young US couple, great relaxed atmosphere to talk to other expats. The hotel has a list of restaurants. Fabios Italian was great also. Tutto Freddos icecream, cakes and pizza in the main Parque Caldrone is wonderful.

Thanks so much!

Just a 5 minutes walk away from the central bus station 'Casa de las Rosas' is a peacful haven after sightseeing and shopping in Cuenca. Lucia the owner comes originally from Italy and you can see that in every little beautiful detail of the hotel. Everything fits perfectly together and charms you as soon as you enter the hotel. The bathrooms are big and offer space for two persons with two sinks. In every room you find fresh flowers and the lobby smells after wonderful incense sticks. Breakfast is freshly prepared for every guest and offers a variety of everything you need including Nutella. If you feel cold you will get-hot water bottles to warm you up. During the day you can have a rest with coffee/tea and a cake at any time in a sitting-room close to the entrance. It was the nicest hotel we had during our 3 weeks in Ecuador and we were sad to leave. Thanks a lot to the whole team in the hotel for making our stay such a pleasure!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the garden are quieter.

We spent three nights at the hotel. We got the room Esmeralda which is perfect for a couple.
Lucia and her team were from the beginning very friendly, helpful and always intended to make the stay comfortable and nice.
The room was very clean and comfortable. The bathroom -also very clean - was even big enough for two people to be in at the same time.
Breakfast was delicious and freshly prepared!

It was the best hotel we had during our 25 days stay in Ecuador!
We just can warmly recommend it!
