We stayed at this hostel for 3 nights and had chosen it based on the reviews which were at times, reaching. The hostel offers decent accommodation but it's on our view not as good as stated. The location is a not as central as other hostels.
The positive:
- helpful and kind staff and knowledgeable about where to go
- lovely garden and very nice courtyard
- decent beds
- good shower
- its clean
What can be improved:
- there rooms are smallish and dark. - The brown bedspreads make everything look dreary
- the breakfast that so many rave about is really quite ordinary
Overall, given the abundance of hotels and hostels in Cuenca, this hostel could become even better by upgrading. The value for money is average in our view. Good luck

We went with our 9 and 11 year olds. We loved the breakfast (artisan bread, homemade marmalade, fruit), the patio, the quiet. The people who worked there were very helpful and nice. It is in the city center, so it is easy to walk back and forth from major sites.

Room tip: When you make a reservation, let them know what you are looking for and they will give you good suggestions.

The hotel is older in a charming way, and and the front desk staff is welcoming and helpful. The rooms are spartan but clean. No extras. However, breakfast each day is home-style and pretty good. There are random works of art around, and gardens with potted plants.

This was my second stay at Hostal Macondo. I first stayed in their Airbnb apartment with friends. This time I was by myself and had a room with private bath. The rooms are not fancy, but clean and comfortable with plenty of water pressure and hot water. The staff is very friendly and accommodating and speaks English if you need it. Hostal Macondo is in the historic part of the city and easy walking to everything, yet it is on a more quieter street. In addition, the rooms are tucked in the back around the inner and outer courtyards, so you get no road noise. You will hear the comings and goings of other guests, as in any hotel, but people were quiet when I was there (I always travel with earplugs anyway). The included breakfast is ample - a choice of 3 options, including eggs. You also help yourself to breads, cheese, juice, coffee and tea. The other thing I like, is that it is a very close ride to the bus terminal and airport, for easy early morning departures. I live in another part of Ecuador, but like to visit Cuenca several times a year. This will be my regular place to stay. TIP: contact the hostal by phone or email and pay cash for the best rate.

The polished wooden floors, cute garden, great value breakfast with the best fresh bread we have sampled in Ecuador and comfy beds made this a very pleasant place to stay. The hostel is in a main road and very convenient to walk into town but inside you could not hear the traffic at all. We were staying in rooms off the main patio entrance so there was a little noise of residents coming and going late at night. Also our shower was tepid rather than hot. But altogether this was a very nice clean place to stay with friendly and helpful staff.
