I have stayed in Hostal Macondo on four different occasions and have never been disappointed. Located in the heart of the city in an old colonial period courtyard home, Macondo offers a variety of clean and comfy accommodations - from rooms with private baths to shared dorm rooms or private rooms with shared bathrooms.

The social/dining/kitchen is a good gathering place to share travel stories with fellow guests, watch movies and generally hang out. For lunch or dinner, guests are welcome to use the kitchen facilities to cook their own meals. For breakfast, guests have their choice of the free continental brekkie or ordering something a little heartier from the menu.

Since Macondo is in an old courtyard home, all rooms are well back of the noise from the street....You will have a nice little courtyard garden to lounge in just outside your room and your sleep will not be disturbed by traffic noise.

The hostal also has laundry service at a very reasonable price.

There is usually English speaking personnel at the front desk and the staff is very helpful in offering directions and suggestions of things to do and see in the beautiful city of Cuenca.

Nice hostal with clean, neat rooms. Close to Cuenca's historic center, restaurants and bars. We stayed for two nights in a two bed room. It had a clean bathroom with a hot shower. The weather was a bit chilly but the room had thick blankets on the bed. The reception helped us arrange a tour to Cajas National Park and it was great. I would stay there again for sure.

It is a very nice place to stay, although more expensive than we would usually spend.
The rooms on the courtyard at the back were nice and clean, and quiet, away from city noise.
There was hot water with enough pressure. The WiFi was good and free.
As other reviews mentioned, breakfast was quite small for the price.
The accommodation price was a bit high for what you get.

Room Tip: try to get the rooms in the back

Such a nice place to stay, although a little more than we would usual spend but well worth it. Lovely colonial buidling with lots of character, spotlessly clean and tidy, great chill out areas and the most well equipped kitchen we have ever come across! Highly recommend if you want to step it up a level.

I stayed here this week with my partner.

The hostel rooms were perfectly nice and the courtyard and building was lovely. We were in a room off of the garden courtyard at the back and I would agree with other reviewers that this is the way to go. It was very quiet and we had a great sleep.

I would also agree with other reviewers that the breakfast is shockingly poor for Ecuador - basically just some cheap watery juice, coffee and bread. We were charged $4.50 extra for one omelet, fruit salad and a single glass of yogurt. That was only one breakfast as my partner was a bit under the weather and didn´t much feel like eating. With the added cost of a real breakfast it is much less good value and when you consider that you can get a three course meal many places in Ecuador for $3.00 the prices seem a bit much.

Also, I would not stay here if you want a lot of support and help from the staff. The woman manning the front desk the morning that we departed behaved in a ridiculously rushed and put upon manner and was a bit huffy about even taking the time to turn on the gas so that we could have a hot shower!

Otherwise, it is a perfectly beautiful, clean hostel with lots of individual charm.

Hello, Molly_kencus.

Thank you for take a time and write your opinion. Sorry about the gas tank and the behavior of the front desk person that day, we train all our staff constantly. About the breakfast it is a buffet one, but I hope you can come back, visit us and enjoyed our colonial house and the garden. Hoping you are doing well. Bye.

When my wife and I travel to new places, we often spend hours seeing a half a dozen different hotels before making a decision. We are looking for something clean, homey, quiet, and inexpensive. We found that all at Hostal Macondo. I think we paid around 30.00. We had a room in the back off the garden. It was a lovely spot to sit and have breakfast. Although it is in the city and close to everything, there was no street noise in the garden area. Most of the front desk people spoke english. There was another hotel down the street that the Lonely Planet called their pick. We looked at it, it was nice, but no garden area and double the price. Macondo was our home away from home for almost a week.

Room Tip: A room off the garden
