I visited this place on my last day in Cuenca. It definitely helps to have dark colouring because they only charge the local rate (but it's still cheap anyway, i think it's $3). There are loads of reptiles including tortoises and snakes and alligators. There was a distressing part when they fed the snakes live chicks (it is illegal to do that in the UK because of animal cruelty laws) and the chick was obviously very distressed. I had to go to the far end of the place so I couldn't hear it. Apart from that I really enjoyed the visit to Amaru. Most of the information boards are only in Spanish but some is in English however I never read those things anyway so it didn't make much difference to me. I would recommend this if you have time in Cuenca and want to do something a bit different to the usual tourist things.
