This cathedral is now functioning as a museum and conference center, but that does not take away from its amazing sculpture and paintings, not to mention the pipe organ! The Last Supper sculpture of life size figures is truly amazing - be sure to notice the various expressions on each figure's face!

Now functioning mostly as a museum, but also a conference venue, the old cathedral is a key anchor in this city.

The old cathedral is filled with sculptures, some of them quite gory. But it's a fascinating place and worth a little time.

The Museo Catedral Vieja, also called the Iglesia del Sagrario, is beautifully restored. For a minimal entrance fee, visitors can walk through and see the many displays inside different sections of the church. The church was left to fall apart for many years, but it's been beautifully restored. The location is right on the main plaza in the historical center of town.

I actually preferred the old cathedral to the new. The old could no longer accomodate the number of worshippers, and was turned into a museum. The old organ still works, and occasionally organ recitals are given. Wish we could have attended one, but none
were scheduled the week we were there.

Spend some time in the old Cathedral, it is worth it. Tremendous renovations and preservation. Take in a free symphony, you can't beat the atmosphere. Very clean, and free banos! What a surprise to find good Mexican food at the small cafe. The enchiladas were tasty, large portions, great guac and good frioles! If you sit outside, avoid the metal butterfly chairs. Lovely to look at, uncomfortable as all heck to sit in! Nice quiet, peaceful surroundings.

The restaurant offers shredded meat buritos with an excellent sauce. Good service and outside seating.

The workman ship of the Museo Catedral Vieja is just beautiful. They have preserved beautiful fresco's, sculptures and even old hand carved furniture, pulpit and church vestments. When one first enters the church, and look towards the alter, you think you are seeing people sitting there having a discussion or perhaps a class. As you get closer, you realize it is life size sculptures depicting the last supper, minus the table. It is very well done and you almost expect the sculptures to move. At $2.00 per person, it is well worth it to see. It no longer functions as a church, but as a place where one can view beautiful architecture and memories from the past. There is even a scale model of the building itself. My husband stands 6 foot 4 inches in height and the model is just about 2 inches taller than he.

Nice but small place to visit, conveniently located in the main square in the center of Cuenca. This used to be the original cathedral and named "old" after the new one was built. Has a nice organ and they have great cultural events. If you have a chance to attend a concert there it will be worthwhile. There are a few items of interest, in particular some old original fotos of Cuenca, in the side passageway. The best part of this experience is the hidden, but exceptional Mexican restaurant by the fountain courtyard.
