“An excellent 16th century building”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

Right on the main square this very old church has now been restored and made into a museum and sometimes a performance venue. The archetucture and art are definately worth seeing as well as the catacombs, if you can get in.

“Great history! Get a knowleagable local!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 3, 2012

We went with our Spanish Teacher who knew quite a bit about the history of the old cathedral. It was quite fun to hear the stories of the restoration and which families were represented by each chapel.

I especially loved the statues of the 12 apostles with Jesus....I have never seen anything like that.

“Beautiful!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2012

This former cathedral has been changed to a lovely and tranquil museum. This has been done the right way! The interior of the church has been left alone....the art on the walls, the frescoes in the niches and the statues are all there. You know it is no longer a cathedral, but you have a lovely sense of tranquility while there. This is the oldest building in Cuenca and the it is treated with respect and reverence. It is well worth the $2.00 entrance fee. Be sure to note the Inca stone foundation....fascinating!

“Beautiful museum/cathedral”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2012

Another must see in Cuenca. This, the first catholic church in Cuenca has been restored (parts still in process) and is a fascinating view of old Cuenca. The statuary is interesting and unusual (full size last supper characters present), with restored ceiling paintings that are gorgeous. I understand there are concerts held here occasionally, although we weren't so lucky. Be sure to check out the scale model of the New Cathedral and what it would have been with its towers.

This is a beautiful place to go in even if you are not religious. There is no fee like at some cathedrals and the architecture is beautiful!
