We enjoyed the large wine list. We chose a modestly priced Reserve Tempranillo and were pleasantly surprised. It was a great match to the filet I ordered and steak with chimmichuri my husband ordered. The portions were huge by Ecuadorian stnadards. We finished off the meal with a very good strudel.

The meal was one of the more expensive of what we had in Cuenca, but half to a third of what we would have paid in a major city in the US

This is a great place for dinner with friends. Service is informed and very cordial. Food is well portioned and properly prepared. Very extensive selection of wines and also a good cigar selection.

The wine list is the best in the city, and the food was very good. Modern, and a little pricey by Cuenca standards, but well worth it.

Cuenca does not have many international restaurants, particularly international restaurants of high quality cuisine to offer. The one exception is Italian food. La Vinoteca and Mangiare Bene are both excellent Italian restaurants with variations of their own that give them each their personal uniqueness. Another very good Italian restaurant of a more traditional style of Italian cuisine is Mediterraneo. La Vinoteca and Mangiare Bene are not only the two best Italian restaurants in Cuenca, but they are among the very best restaurants in the city, Both, in my opinion, should be ranked among the top five restaurants in the city.

Vinoteca offers possibly the largest wine selection in the city. The restaurant is very rich in ambiance, and the service is warm and friendly. The graciousness of our waiter enhanced the entire evening's dining experience. Excellent soft, flavorful garlic bread (the best I've enjoyed in Cuenca) is provided as a side with two dips, neither of which is necessary, because the flavorfulness of the garlic preparation on the bread is delicious and totally satisfying in itself.

The main entrees were all excellent. The lomo fino with blue cheese topping was extraordinarily tender and flavorful, as were the pasta and salmon dish wrapped and served in parchment paper, the shrimp risotto was exceptional, and the lasagna was very good. The lasagna was more liquid in nature than most Americans would be accustomed, but like all the entrees, it was excellent due to its enriching taste of flavors. In an Ecuadorian culture where most dishes tend to be bland, places like Tiesto's and Vinoteca's offer a rich texture of tantalizing flavors in the preparations of their dishes. I saw a dish of what appeared to be an artistically inviting plate of lamb shanks delivered to another table. The young Ecuadorian lady was very pleased with her choice.

Surprisingly, Vinoteca also offers of all things a variety of Sushi and Sashimi entrees on their menu. Considering that there are only two Sushi restaurants in Cuenca of varying quality, I look forward to trying Vinoteca's oriental selections. We saw two plates of sushi delivered to a table that look both generous in portions and beautifully arranged. If the taste of Vinoteca's sushi and sashimi are as good as their presentation, and as good as the flavorfulness of their Italian dishes; Vinoteca will truly be a culinary delight of the highest order in Cuenca.

Vinoteca has a rich classical feel to it without being overly formalized and starchy, and offers a number of small intimate rooms. As an afterthought of my enjoyable almost four hour dinner with friends was the fact that we were able to converse without shouting over live or taped music,or televisions blaring at us. Ours was a nice, quiet atmosphere in which background music was not at all missed. I highly recommend Vinoteca if you live in or visit Cuenca. The prices are on the more expensive side by Cuenca's standards (entrees $10 to $20), but well worth the value for eating at one of Cuenca's finest dining spots.

I have now been to most of the highly rated restaurants in Cuenca. For a traditional restaurant, there is none better in this city. And yet they never appear to be busy. The establishment boasts a choice of wines, (the walls are lined with a wide selection) not found anywhere else I have been. The wait staff is courteous, friendly and speaks enough English to be helpful with the menu. Our party had selections of Tuna, Fettucine, and Steaks. All were cooked to perfection and the presentation was first class.

You will be hard pressed to find a better atmosphere or menu in Cuenca and the prices are very modest albeit slightly higher than some others in the city.

Please go and enjoy!
