“New Management/Much Improved”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2013

I reviewed this restaurant about a year ago and gave it a low rating based on food and service. I'm happy to report that under new management, this place is beginning to sparkle. The room remains one of the loveliest and most fashionable in Cuenca - a very inviting retreat with views north to the Tomabamba River. Service is highly personalized, the menu has been thoughtfully revamped with Italian and Ecuadorian specialties, and very well executed. Pasta, for example, is home-made. Mariscos are impeccably fresh. Meat dishes feature choice cuts prepared exactly as ordered. Vegetables come straight from their garden. And - surprise! - the house wine is actually excellent. So we are happy to recommend Todosantos for dinner (also open for breakfast and lunch).

“Todos Santos - Move Over Tiéstos!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 31, 2013

The restaurant at the convent Todos Santos reopened a few weeks ago after a fabulous remodeling. The setting, overlooking the Tomebamba River and Parque de la Madre, allows for a relaxing and unhurried romantic evening. The chef, Mauricio Bernal, took great pains to ensure we had an enjoyable evening. And the food was truly out of this world. We had the filet por dos personas and it was a most imaginative and flavorful combination of flavors. My husband and I agreed that it was the BEST we have ever had.

All of the vegetables are organic and from the convent's own garden. And cooked to perfection.

So now we have TWO favorite restaurants in Cuenca - Tiéstos and Todos Santos.
The entrance can be a bit hard to see. It is right on the south side of Calle Larga just west of Mariano Cueva. It is an innocuous doorway and the sign says cafeteria. Do not be put off - there is nothing cafeteria-like about this place.

“Great food, great service, great venue”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2013 via mobile

My girlfriend and I visited this restaurant on a Monday evening for dinner.

Upon entering the building, you take a short walk down a grand corridor, passing an upmarket hat shop and rather nice looking bakery. On first impressions, the grandeur of this building made me think this was going to be one expensive meal.

We were warmly treated at the door by the manager (I think!) Who then preceded to give us a tour of the building. What an experience! He was clearly very proud of the place, and so he should be. This 500 year old building has been restored to an excellent standard, keeping elements of it's original heritage and fusing them with a sleek finish.

After the tour, we were seated in the restaurant and had amazing views down to the river.

The menu was described as typical Ecuadorian, however don't be mislead, because this is Ecuadorian food at the highest level.

Having read the other reviews, I opted for the trout which came highly recommended. Oh wow! The trout was cooked to perfection, and was generously topped with large prawns and clams, and a delicious white sauce. On the side was a portion of aromatic yellow rice and a touch of salad. Every mouthful was amazing.

And the price... Extremely reasonable for Cuenca. I honestly don't know how they were able to sell my dish at the price they did, and I would have been willing to pay a lot more!

The waiter was the star of the show, having gone over and above to make our visit as memorable as it was.

This is the first time I have written a review about a restaurant, and that speaks volumes!

We originally went to the bakery to buy some bread and saw the restaurant and bakery oven. This is the most amazing mix of classy decor in a 16th Century convent. They have their own herb /kitchen garden. All their veggies are grown right there. We happened to be the first customers of their recent 2 year renovation. The chef took us around and showed us the history of the building. The huge wooden oven was in operation, of course, and we got to see a master baker using long paddles to move the breads around for even baking. Be sure to get some of the "Baby Bread." And for sure don't miss out on the fruit drink. It is like drinking grandma's best berry pie from a cup. Their coconut cake was perfect. We had the steak for two. Excellent.

“Quite an Experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 7, 2013

Last Friday night we had an incredible dining experience at the new Restaurante Todos Santos. Not only was the food delightful, it was cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was spiritual. We were dining in what we gather was a cellar of the Todos Santos Church and Rectory. The Host and Master Chef, Mauricio Bernal, was very personable and invited us to visit many of the rooms while he explained its history.

We highly recommend Restaurante Todos Santos if you desire an unusual night out. You may find that this will bring you closer to South America and Cuenca.
