We only had 3 nights here over Christmas but our apartment did the job. From our first email contact Xavier was really helpful and ended up organising a van to collect us from Guayaquil airport when we got a bit stuck with our travel arrangements. At the last minute we had an extra guest with us and he was accommodated in our 2 bed apartment without any trouble and at no extra charge. The hotel is close to town, we walked everywhere and right by some small shops and a supermarket. (which was closed on christmas day so I couldn't say how good that was). The area felt very safe and we all walked back quite happily from dinner after eating in town. We could tell there was a great atmosphere here, I think lots of people have extended stays, there was even a bring and share party on christmas day, which we unfortunately couldn't go to as we were out hiking. Lovely place to stay.

We just completed a one month stay in a one bedroom apartment with a cost averaging less than $20 per day. The apartment was clean, and the daily housekeeping service kept it that way - they even did our breakfast dishes for us! The owner (Xavier) and his wife were very helpful, answering our questions and providing us with directions and tips abut the area. When we first arrived I think most all the units were occupied by people from the US and Canada. The neighbors were very helpful in getting us settled and providing us with recommendations. We were fortunate and had some very delightful people as our neighbors, and now longer term friends. Toward the end of our stay perhaps one-third of the units were occupied by Ecuadorians on holiday, and everyone was very friendly.

The location is very good, about a 15-25 minute walk along Rio TomeBamba into El Central depending upon how fast you walk and the route taken. Our unit backed up on the RioTomeBamba, which I believe is quieter than the units in front along 12 de Abril.

The beds were comfortable and they provided enough blankets that kept us more than toasty on a few cold nights. The kitchen supplies were basic. We picked up a few items at the Mercado or Supermaxi to make it easier for preparing meals, but there is enough provided to get by. The towels were ok, not JW Marriott quality, but we weren't paying Marriott prices.

There was a small TV in the apartment which had stations with shows in both English and Spanish, Wi-fi is included but it can be slow if the bandwidth is being hit by a bunch of people - same as any hotel. Hot water was ok after we learned what to expect and some of the nuances; hot water was the right handle in the kitchen and shower, and the left handle in the bathroom sink. Tankless hot water heaters are more flow-sensitive than the tanks so common in the US, and flow volume could change depending upon how many units were up and showering.

The apartment we had was very clean and very comfortable. The Xavier and his staff were great. Xavier is a wealth of information and can help you with any trips you may want to take. Sara and Angelita who ran the office and took care of everybodys rooms were great. Rooms were cleaned everyday including washing any dishes you left around. The Apartments are in a great location a 10 to 15 minute walk to the center of the Historic district and buses and cabs were right outside our door. Tomenta the guard dog was great and I find myself missing him. I would highly recomend you stay here for the short term or the long term.

Nice place to stay in Cuenca. It is located within an easy walk to almost everything. The bus stop is only steps away. The staff is friendly and will take care of you. Comfortable beds. Tormento, the guard dog is one of the smartest dogs I've ever met and will bring a smile to your face.

Cons: Can get a bit chilly in the morning. The biggest problem we had was that the sofa/sleeper was VERY uncomfortable to sit on so there was no place to chill out in the evening.

Could I suggest a weekly manager's reception in the cafe' every Wednesday evening where all of the expats and expats-to-be could share their experiences and travel tips.

What a deal! Averaged about $18.33 per night. Close to everything in Cuenca. Walking distance to city center. Located on the Tomebamba River. We felt safe and secure during our stay. Very clean. Hot water. Rooms have kitchens with pots, pans, dishes, and utensils. The owner, Xavier, is very accommodating. He gave us lots of information about Cuenca, restaurants, things to do, etc. His employees, Sarah and Angelita are wonderful. Both ladies helped us with our Spanish, and were always friendly. Sarah makes a delicious breakfast, if you dont want to cook your own. They made us feel like family. Lovely courtyard with lots of blooming plants. We stayed in three different rooms, on on the river side. #5 and #6 have ovens and a cooktop. #4 only has a cooktop. While staying at Otorongo, we met many other Americans and Canadians trying Cuenca on for retirement. Lots of good information from them. When we come back to Cuenca, we will stay here again, while looking for a permanent place to live.

When we were picked up at the Guayaquil airport by this hotel's manager, I quickly realized we would be taken care of very well. What a remarkable person! Xavier and his family, as well as the wonderful employees, make sure that each day "works" the way it should for every guest. These apartments are beautifully cared for and the total experience of staying here provides an excellent way of getting to know and appreciate Cuenca. This was a wonderful introduction to a city that is an amazing place to visit. The charming apartments are on the river -- so close you can hear it flow -- and they are an easy distance for a nice walk to the center of town, museums, galleries and the main university. Each morning we enjoyed our breakfast in the courtyard and appreciated the services provided by the pleasant staff. This is a 5-star place to land!

After staying in several Hostels and Hotels, this was the most relaxing. The courtyard, river and apartment provide a variety of places to relax. We enjoyed the Hummingbirds and the Gold Fish. The staff was warm and helpful. Buses and Taxies are right out in front! We spent two weeks at Apartamentos Torongo and hope they have an opening for us upon our return to Cuenca.

Room Tip: Consider whether you want to be near the river, street or in between....
