“Best American Style restaurant in Cuenca”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

We wanted some pancakes, french toast and scrambled egg whites just like you can get at the
IHOP (International House of Pancakes). We final found this great little restaurant CALIFORNIA KITCHEN the food was so good and and it was a lot of it. Pancakes, sausage, egg whites just how we like them. When visiting Cuenca on your vacation you have got to stop by and I know you will take a to go box with you. They give you plenty of what you order. BON APETIT!

“Overpriced & Overrated, Very average American food at Gringo Prices”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

I have eaten at California Kitchen 4-5 times. The first four, at their former location and in the presence of the owners family, who are very friendly and very warm, Because of Carol, George, and their daughter Suzie are such nice people, I did not have the heart to write a review saying what I thought, which is: average food, impossibly high prices for Cuenca, service could be better, nice atmosphere, warm and hospitable hosts.

The last time I was there in February, for brunch. The owners were not there. The menu was very restricted and one could not order the excellent breakfast that was served, as it turned out, only to the people staying at the hotel, in which the restaurant is located,

The so called French toast was simply abysmal - thin piece of bad bread with mounts of cream cheese. Where they managed to find such bad bread is a mystery, since Cuenca has excellent bread. And who did tell them that half an inch topping of this bad bread with the monthly allowance of cholesterol is anything like French toast is even a bigger mystery. As for the price of this tasteless offense to one's health it is simply an outrage. Something around $9 plus tax and service fees The only good thing about that brunch was good coffee, with free refill . However wait for that refill was very-very long and required a couple reminders.

Doubt I will ever come back. But it might a good place for visiting Gringos, who wish to be in an English speaking atmosphere and are not familiar with Ecuadorian prices, so do not know better

Thank you for your review. There are several points in your review that are incorrect.

1. We have a special menu on Sunday for Brunch. It is not a restrictive menu. The Executive breakfast which is served to the Hotel guests is also available upon request for $3.99, tax included.

2.You mis stated the price of the French toast. You stated it is $9 plus tax and service fees. This is incorrect. It is $7.99 which includes all taxes and service fees. it always has been.

3. You are the first person EVER to complain about our stuffed French toast special. Just last Sunday we sold more than 12 orders of French toast alone and received rave reviews from our customers. The French toast is stuffed with cream cheese and fresh fruit, garnished with homemade fruit couli and includes 3 strips of bacon.

4. Your statement that our prices are overpriced is also incorrect, just as your misquoting of the price of the French toast special. There are cheaper places to eat in Cuenca, but you get what you pay for. We provide the best quality, freshest products, and prepare them with passion.

We find it strange that you would come to our restaurant 5 times or more if our food was so terrible!
We encourage tripadvisor members to read the 100 or more reviews for our restaurant that sing praises of our food, service, and environment. Virtually all of the negative reviews are from penny pinchers expecting rock bottom prices.

“Nice change from Ecuadorian cuisine”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

We've eaten brunch & lunch @ California Kitchen. The brunch - eggs benedict w/ home made hollandaise and fresh asparagus - was as good as we have ever had. The lunch - pulled pork sandwich for me, Ceasar salad w/ grilled chicken for her - was good but nothing great. Both times, the service was very attentive. Its not gourmet but it is good quality Gringo comfort food - California style.
