It may be a tourist attraction but how interesting! The hats you get here are incredible for the price vs what you can find elsewhere. Definitely a must-see if you go to Cuenca.

Worthy stop and shop! The savvy cool of a Panama hat started right here in this region....where local women still weave the fibers from palms to create beautiful hats which are brought for review and acceptance - we were there and met some of the women waiting for their hats to be viewed. The hats are then bleached, shape-pressed etc... a long and traditional process you can see in action right here. The displays, descriptive wall photos, and history plaques tell the story well. The tour ends at the shop where experienced workers will help fit you for the right hat, the style and even help you pick the band colour. Prices range from $40-1500 USD. You will be offered an option to bag or box your purchase - opt for the box since we were able to take it on airlines as carry-on and the box travelled well in a tour bus, local bus, taxis etc.

You'll see me around town in my hat... the one Johnny Depp is wearing in the photo on their wall. I've definitely got hattiude!

PS Panama hats got their name because 1000's of these Ecuadorian hats were sent north for the workers who built the canal.

This factory and has a shop and a history of Panama hats in South America. It was good to learn how the hats are produced by local people and then how they are got ready for sale. We had an excellent guide who explained everything very clearly. The shop is fascinating although there is a certain pressure to buy, and these hats are not cheap, although given the amount the local people are paid to produce them they ought to be even more so that these skilled workers could be paid a better rate. My husband did buy himself one in the end and we were given detailed instructions as to how to look after it.

Visiting this was part of a half-day Greyline tour for us, and it was interesting. Good coverage of Panama hats' history, making and lore. You can see the process beginning to end. Nice people, good giftshop.

The tour was fascinating and the hats are magnificent. Bought one for Dad, after learning all about the history of the hats, their origin, how they are made, and Homero Ortega himself. It makes it that much more meaningful a gift when I can share so much information about it.
