I know the title probably doesn't make sense until you hear "cuy" pronounced as "cooey" which is how Ecuadorians say it. Cuy is guinea pig and is a delicacy in Ecuador as well as being one of the most expensive food items you can order. If you can get past the "they're so cute" and want to try cuy, this is the place- even my guide in Quito suggested I try it in Cuenca and my Cuenca guide, a lifelong native of the city, suggested Guajibamba. The setting is warm and friendly with antique telephones and sewing machines scattered about for décor; the service is wonderful, and the cuy is absolutely delicious. They prepare it on a wood spit over fresh coals so the skin is crispy and the meat tender and juicy. The sides of potatoes, hard boiled eggs, and hominy were also well prepared. If you're going to go for it and try cuy, go here- you almost certainly won't regret it.
