“For a very good almuerzo for only $3.50, go to Tio Pepe”

We were walking in the centro of historic Cuenca and passed a sign that advertised an almuerzo that sounded very appealing -- and for only $3.50. We had to try it, and we are very glad we did. In a nice, light-filled room (skylight), we were seated in a room that was full of locals, people who know good food and good value. The almuerzo included a glass of fruit juice, a bowl of excellent soup (with a small bowl of hominy if one wished to make it more substantial). Entrees that day included a choice of chicken that was served with fresh plantain chips or meatballs served with a shredded vegetable fritter. And if that is not enough, each main dish had a salad of greens and sliced tomato with garnish of green beans and another bean I couldn't identify. Dessert was cheesecake with strawberry glaze and graham cracker crust. Excellent.

We stopped by this place's open front door. It was a bit chilly (Ecuadorian winter, never really cold but cool), so there was a gas heater in the light-filled central courtyard. The menu looked great, we were hungry so we went in. We are delighted we did. Almuerzo started with a tall glass of lemonade and "oatmeal" in the bottom. (This I cannot explain. But I saw it. Can't say it added to the flavor.) Then an excellent bowl of chicken stock with herbs. It was served with a sauce you could add for a bit of zip. Also, a bowl of hominy to add substance. Very good. For the entree there was a choice of meatballs or chicken. With both choices, there was a large serving or rice, an Ecuadorian staple. (Very good rice is grown in Ecuador.) Also with both entree choices there was a green salad with greens, tomato slices, a few green beans and an unknown brown bean, possibly pickled. With the chicken and cinammon sauce, there also were some flavorful, fresh plantain chips. And with the meatballs, there was a wedge of shredded veggies bound with eggs. For dessert, a little cheesecake with a topping strawberries and graham cracker crust. All this served with a smile -- and rapidly for workers -- for only $3.50. We will be back.
