We were walking in the centro of historic Cuenca and passed a sign that advertised an almuerzo that sounded very appealing -- and for only $3.50. We had to try it, and we are very glad we did. In a nice, light-filled room (skylight), we were seated in a room that was full of locals, people who know good food and good value. The almuerzo included a glass of fruit juice, a bowl of excellent soup (with a small bowl of hominy if one wished to make it more substantial). Entrees that day included a choice of chicken that was served with fresh plantain chips or meatballs served with a shredded vegetable fritter. And if that is not enough, each main dish had a salad of greens and sliced tomato with garnish of green beans and another bean I couldn't identify. Dessert was cheesecake with strawberry glaze and graham cracker crust. Excellent.
