I know its the main tourist area but I thought it was worth checking out despite the bad press it gets. I can sum it up in one word: seedy. It's got lots of bars that have one goal in mind...to get everyone blinding drunk at lunchtime. I felt the need to get out of there as quickly as possible and didn't stop till I was safely away. Why anyone would choose to spend time there is beyond me. I've been to plenty of tourist areas, partied there for many nights to my heart's content but not this place. Horrible. It needs a good clean.

It may be considered new, but the sidewalks look like they,be been through a bombing campaign in many places. There is a lot of improvement being made and nice cobbled walks being laid down, but it adds to the vibrant frenzy of the Mariscal district. This is the area where real Ecuadorians live and work so don't expect tons of tourist stuff. A great place to appreciate daily life in Quito.

It's a great place to go and get cheap, strong drinks and dance at night. The only problem is you have to watch for petty theft and over-grabby men. During the day it is a good place to go for coffee, lunch, tattoos and tour companies.

Walked through this area one day and was so bored.Nothing to do here except see expensive tourist restaurants and bars/clubs. Not a hint of culture anywhere. I walked through and only stopped once is started raining and that was to catch a cab.

Full of bar, discos and hotels, no doubt this place is made it for tourist.
Is a good place if you are looking for fun (at night especially) but I prefer the quiet and interesting old town to stay in Quito. A lot of people told me the last place is safer than la Mariscal.
