Me and my family stayed at the Folklore for three nights total, two at the beginning of our stay in Ecuador, and one before we flew home. And I must say, it exceeded any expectation I had. The staff was amazing and helpful far beyond the call of duty. When we went to Banos for two days they held on to our luggage free of charge. Later, when I forgot my brand new iPhone at the Folklore they kept it for me for two weeks until I got back there. The rooms were nice enough and the location, within walking distance from the Mariscal, suited us perfectly. This is where I will be staying the next time I visit Quito.

My experience at the Folklore was that I felt like family more than as only a guest. The hotel is situated in a quiet neighborhood called La Floresta. The Folklore is run by Bernardo and his wife Yadira. They were always available to answer any questions and were very helpful when it came to tours or places to see in Ecuador. I speak fluent Spanish which made life a little easier for me but Bernardo speaks English. I found the location of the hotel to be excellent because most of the tourist sites were only a few dollars cab ride away. The WiFi and satellite television worked perfectly. I was also lucky enough to travel with Bernardo and his family to a small town which has hot springs and is located about an hour and a half from Quito.

The Folklore is conveniently locate near the Mariscal district is about a 20 minute walk. There you will find many bars, restaurants, shopping and many travel agencies.

Bernardo also has a small hotel (cabanas) located across the street from a beach in Sua, which is an 8 hour bus ride ($9). It is located in a small fishing village and is a great place to relax.

I stayed about 2 months at the Folklore and another month in Sua at the beach. I cant wait to return next year.

Room Tip: I had 2 rooms with a small kitchen. There are also a couple of rooms with fireplaces available.

We originally were going to stay here for three days and then venture out of the city but it made more sense economically to stay here for our entire week. Bernardo (the owner) offers tours right from the hotel in the comfort of his 4x4 Jeep at a very good price. The included breakfast is great and the wifi is very reliable. Overall, a very pleasant experience for our first visit to Ecuador. And the location of the hotel (La Floresta) is much nicer and quieter (and safer) than the busier La Mariscal (Gringolandia), even though it is a short walk to this area.

i had the unfortunate experience of staying at this hotel or should i say hostal. the owner bernardo was extremely rude to my fiance solely because she is colombian. he was very unreasonable with me and provided me with absolutely no reason as to his treatment of my fiance. i was forced to leave the hostal and now i am staying at a much better place where the staff and owner treat myself and my fiance with total respect and decency. this hostal is horrible and unless you want to be around a very rude and racist staff i suggest to stay clear of this place

We used this hotel twice as we went to and from Galapagos. We received attentive, helpful service. As an example, the host insisted on lending us an umbrella when we walked out in the rain to the supermarket, and when I asked if there was futbol on TV that night he tuned the set in the dining area to the channel and found out what other games were being played. We felt very safe and welcome here and Folklore will be our first choice if we return to Quito.

My friend and I spent 4 nights in this small family run hotel. Bernardo, the owner, and his wife, Yadira, were very welcoming. They helped us find a good restaurant, reliable transportation to and from the airport, and a great guide for our tour of La Mitad del Mundo. The neighborhood was safe, yet conveniently located. The rooms (we stayed in 2 different ones since our stay was divided into the 2 ends of a trip to the Galapagos) were comfortable, roomy, and adorably decorated, and we felt safe leaving our valuables there. They provided purified water as well as FREE phone calls to the states, WIFI, and access to a computer. When we brought home an extra couple with us from our visit to the Galapagos, they were very understanding, and found a space for them as well. Finally, Principe, the rabbit, entertained us, as he hopped about.

After a sixteen day tour through Ecuador with a travel group, I was ready to relax. After staying in a wide variety of accomidations from jungle huts to spas to swanky high end hotels, I was ready for anything that gave me some space of my own. Upon arriving late in the evening, I was greeted by Bernardo and his family. Though Bernardo appears to be the only person at the Folklore who speaks English, everyone else was friendly and communication was rarely a problem.

I was given a choice between a room and a suite. I decided to pay a few extra dollars per night for the suite, which in addition to the bed, had a fireplace, a desk, a couch, a television, and a comfy chair. There was also an area with a sink but without other kitchen features, it didn't seem to add much in the way of functionality to the suite but it was nice extra space to spread out in. The bathroom was tiny, as was the shower. This was perfectly fine for myself but for a couple trying to get ready in the morning, it could be an issue.

The suite, as the entire property, was decorated in an ecclectic artistic style. While some might raise an eyebrow at the painting of a topless angel, it fit the vibe of the place perfectly. The suite was clean and the sheets and towels were changed each day. This was easy to see since they used different designed sheets each day and folded the towels into various shapes like a boat or a swan. It was a nice touch. The bed in my room came with five pillows, a nice touch for those of us who like extra functional pillows that most hotels are stingy with and not useless decorative pillows like you find haunting the beds at fancy high end properties.

Do keep in mind that this is basically a converted home and as such noise does travel easily through the property. The street is very active during the day and evening so if your room faces the front, you will get noise. But late in the evening and into the night, the neighborhood quiets down significantly and I never had trouble getting to sleep.

One of the quirkier features of the Folklore is the resident rabbit named Prince. While very tame, he is a bit spoiled and if you leave your door open, he will come hopping into your room and refuse to leave until he is good and ready to go. If you don't leave your door open, he will sometimes come scratching on the door wanting in. Ignore him for a minute and he'll go away. In someways Prince is like a dog and will follow you around the property, keeping you company while you hang out in the hammock or under the trees in the front courtyard.

The prices at the Folklore were very reasonable and the included breakfast is basic but filling. This isn't the Hotel Quito but you're also not paying anywhere near the Hotel Quito prices. It's a much more intimate and friendly place to stay. As long as you keep in mind that it's family run property converted from a house and not a built from the ground up as a hotel property, you'll enjoy your stay.

The location isn't in the middle of everything but it is close to most of the places you're going to want to go. During the day you can easily walk to Plaza Fosh and the artisian market. You can also walk a bit further to Old Town but cabs are so inexpensive in Quito, you could use that walking time for exploring more of the beautiful historic center. The surrounding neighborhood is mostly residential so you can find bakeries, pharmacies, fruit stands and even a SuperMaxi nearby. You can even get a manicure down the street for USD$2.50. The neighborhood does have more graffiti than most tourist parts of the city, which can make some feel unsafe. As in most of Quito, if you're going out at night, you should use a taxi. The staff is happy to call one for you and they usually arrive in a couple of minutes. If you arrange a taxi a day in advance and it doesn't show up on time, don't wait too long before asking the staff to arrange another one. Taxi companies in Quito are notorious for not keeping up with calls made in advance.

If I'm ever in Quito again, I would stay at the Folklore without hesitation and would recommend it to my friends.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the road get lots of noise during the day and early evening but that diminishes later i...
