“12,585' up with an awesome view of the city!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2013 via mobile

This gondola ride is well worth the $12! Even though it was a little cloudy the day we went up, openings in the clouds and sunbursts made the views very dramatic! We like to hike so we took the trail that ascended even higher, up to about 14,300' with no problem. It's possible to climb to over 16,000' on this trail but we didn't have time that day. We did, however, grab an over priced "Nescafé" at the coffee shop.

“Not so spectacular!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2013

I have mixed feelings about my visit to Quito's main attraction. I visited on Friday morning, so it was not busy with visitors (I assume it is probably packed on holidays and weekends). The view was OK but nothing special. Since the weather changes rapidly, it effects the distant view of the volcanos and mountains. Teleferiqo should be visited ONLY on a clear day, so one can have a great experience and a great view. Clouds are forming quickly, usually around peaks, so even if it's a clear day, the clouds could still cover some of the magnificent snow covered volcanos. Bring lots of water, as drinking water helps on high altitudes. Price to get up is $8.50 per person for a cable car.

“Great views, fascinating trip up and down”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2013

Wonderful panorama of Quito and (on not-so-cloudy days) a good view of the volcano Pichincha. On the down side, apart from the actual teleferico, the place seems to be deteriorating. Most of the little stalls at both ends of the teleferico are closed. What seemed to be hotel rooms at the top were abandoned and gutted of furnishings. The food service places that were open only had a few things on their posted menu available. Someone needs to step up and refurbish what could be a stellar place!

“For the best view of Quito”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2013

Take a gondola ride up the side of Guagua Pichincha the sleeping volcano that dominates the West side of Quito. You will taken up the mountainside to have the opportunity to do a variety of activities.

You can simply stay near the station and take in the views; go on a hike on well-marked trails in the area; go on a horseback ride or mountain bike back down the mountain.

The trail offers several look-out points that are worth huffing and puffing to get to. Be careful if you plan on doing a hike, the altitude is quite high and you must be well-acclimated to the altitude before you attempt it. Regardless, it's more or less an easy hike and special gear will not be required nor a guide. Allow yourself several hours to complete the hike with a chance to stop and take in the scenery.

Quito is often over-cast in the afternoons from October-May. It's best to go as soon as the venue opens. A fun option is to go in the evening to get a view of the city at night. Weather is erratic and rainy clouds can roll is quickly. Come prepared with a jacket/coat just in case. Also bring sunscreen as the sun is extremely intense.

“Picturesque views of Quito & the Andes”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 29, 2013

I lived in Quito for a year and I have to say, TeleferiQo offers some of the absolute best views of the city, the Valley beyond it, and the Andes. It's fairly new, so the cable cars are pretty nice despite some jerking around while you're on your way up. You can take a local bus partway up Pichincha, followed by a free shuttle bus up to the cable car starting point; pretty easy overall. Not a lot of "activities" at the top, but it's gorgeous and you can easily spend several hours hiking around. There are beautiful hiking paths up there, but don't overestimate what you can do (and hike with a buddy) as the altitude is intense. Also, don't forget the sunscreen! It feels chilly (wear a sweater) but the sunlight can do a lot of damage that high up if it's clear over even partly cloudy. Other than that - enjoy the glorious view!
