The Teleferico is a nice trip up to the mountain, where we can view the whole city of Quito and surroundings.
From the top, you can choose to just walk in some trails, or enjoy the view and have coffee in the cafeteria there.
At the top there is a medical clinic, in case you are afraid of the high altitude effects.
If you love mountain bikes, it is possible to go up with the bike attached to the teleferic car and get down riding it.

Not only does the Teleferico lift you up to 4100 metres and a great view over all of Quito (a stunning view on clear, crisp day), but the ride itself is worth while.

I strongly recommend going for a hike from the top of the Teleferico. There's a well-worn path that will eventually lead you to the summit of Mt. Rucu Pichincha (4.700 metres). The mountain is not to be trifled with. It can be challenging and can be cold and windy. Bring good footwear, gloves and adequate layers if you're going to try for the top. But anyone can hike at least part way up. There's a long gradual path that leads to the base of the mountain's rocky peak which is a lovely and rewarding hike.

Our trip up the teleférico was extended due to some maintenance...which lasted 45 minutes. We got some expensive hot chocolate and a snack at the top, then enjoyed the incredible views. We went at about 3:30, and finally got to the top at 4:30. The sun was starting to go down and the clouds were rolling in toward the south - beautiful! We had a long line to wait in to go down since it cools off quite quickly at the top when the sun goes down. It is supposed to have great views at night, but we had a long day and were ready to be back. I highly recommend this! They only take cash (as most places in Ecuador do), so come with plenty.

Teleferiqo is an absolute must-do if you are in Quito for a few days. There are tour buses that make the climb, but my husband and I took a $3.00 cab ride from Old Town.
The gondola ride gives amazing perspective on the steep Andean peaks, and how the vegetation changes so dramatically within such small variances in elevation. Once atop the mountain, you will see the vast city of Quito, planes landing amid the sprawl, lush, green mountains, and the whitest, most puffy clouds forming right before your eyes. There are hiking trails, horse rentals, and photos opportunities. Enjoy! Just make sure to take it slowly if you are not accustomed to the altitude.

Really cool experience. I'm afraid of heights so found it hard at times, but once you get up the views are just spectacular. Must-do if you go to Quito.
