“A place to see cloudforest birds, but a steep hike to lodge”
Reviewed December 20, 2007

I stayed for 5 nights at this lodge as part of a birding tour operated by Tropical Birding, an Ecuadorian ecotourism company, one of whose owners also owns the Tandayapa Lodge. It is an excellent location for those wanting to see cloudforest birds. It is spacious and the rooms are large and clean.
A big shock for me was that the lodge is 50-60 meters above the parking lot and you have to walk up a ramped concrete trail with 77 steps to get to the lodge. At 8,400 feet elevation this is not a trivial matter, particularly if you are carrying a knapsack, cameras, spotting scope, etc. Apparently, there is little to no accommodation for folks who are not fit and agile. There really is no other practical way to get to the lodge. The trails are also often quite slippery. I was careful and did not fall, but caution to those not agile.
The food was a set piece every day, there was no choice. They had excellent soups and entrees that were interesting but forgettable, and some desert. Not bad, but not the highlight.
The upper patio has lots of hummingbirds, but they are tough to photograph because it tends to be dark and cloudy..
Most folks that have stayed there love it, but I think it is critical that those going there have appropriate expectations.

  • Liked — The hummingbird feeders, bird observation blind, wonderful soups with meals.
  • Disliked — The bone-jarring roads to reach it, the steep walkway to the lodge.

Wonderful experience.

I am not a birder, but enjoyed this experience very much.

In two days we saw 140 different species of birds. Our guides arranged for breakfast at 5 a.m. and we went full blast both days until sunset at 6 p.m. The guides were terrific. Pricey, but well woth the money.

Food at lodge was wonderful. Lodge is well situated in the cloud forest.

This will be an experience you will never forget.

We chose Cloud Forest rather than Amazon for cool weather and no malaria issues.

We just returned from 13 days in Ecuador where we went primarily to see the many fantastic birds there. We were a group of ten who knew each other and were joined by a guide and driver from Tropical Birding. They were excellent!

I would like to particularly mention Tandayapa Bird Lodge which is set in the cloudforest and is a great place to stay. The 7 hummingbird feeders on the deck attract 20+ species of hummingbird. The trails on their property are fun to explore. The food is wonderful. Those working at the Lodge are pleasant.

Tandayapa Bird Lodge comprises of a main building (where ten of the rooms are located), and another outlying building with two further rooms. The main lodge has been designed with convenience in mind;there is no need to hike between your rooms and the dining area. The outer rooms are used for those who wish for more seclusion, away from the main building. The entire lodge is based within verdant cloudforest, on the western slope of the Andes in Ecuador, virtually on the equator. The lodge’s centerpiece is the balcony, where a series of feeders bring in a variety of hummingbirds species daily. Over 30 hummingbird species have been recorded, and usually more than a dozen species come in daily. Forest trails are available on site, and the lodge is situated within a core of excellent birding and nature areas, and so is often used as an extended base to visit these too. ... more   less
