I liked this hotel quite a lot. We had the honeymoon suite, which at $65 a night, was good value. It has a great location (3 mins to Plaza Grande, 5 mins to La Ronda) and the main building and courtyard are beautiful.

The staff were helpful, with the exception of one young boy who spoke no English and didn't seem to be able to work the computer system very well either. I'm fine with people not speaking any English, we are in Ecuador after all, but with everyone else I've encountered we've managed to bumble along with a phrase book and sign language. Not this boy. He was on reception both when we checked in and when we left after the first part of our stay there (we did a two part trip to Quito) . He managed to forget to book a taxi for us, despite it being written in the taxi book, in Spanish, by a previous member of staff, leaving us stranded at the airport when we got back to Quito; he also never bothered to mention that there's a discount for paying cash, and lost the second part of our booking by not being able to work the booking spreadsheet... The other staff were great though.

The room we had had lovely views (basically a glass box on top of the house) but was looking a tiny bit tired around the edges. It was spotlessly clean though. There's 5 flights of stairs to the top though so it's not for the unfit!

As some have mentioned previously, breakfast is juice, eggs, jam and breads, but I thought this was perfectly adequate. You need to leave enough room for a traditional 3 course Ecuadorian lunch anyway.

I'd stay here again, for the price.

I was booked in this hotel before and after tours to the Galápagos and amazon... It's a beautifully presented hotel in a fantastic location so close to the old town centre. My first room facing the street although large and spacious was quite cold and noisy. Next time I had a room downstairs facing the courtyard which was much nicer and it also was close enough to the terrace to get wifi while sitting in bed! Some rooms don't receive wifi and you have to come sit in the communal area which is still lovely but it means it's a bit awkward to skype! Breakfast was average at best.

This hotel is in a really good location and if you don't mind not having customer service then it's probably quite a good place to stay. The staff don't speak very good English and when they do if u ask them for help they seem really inconvenienced by it. Also the breakfast was very average consisted of scrambled eggs and some cold bread that arrived late. The amenities are good no wi fi in bedrooms and don't even bother using the computers down stairs cos they don't work. It has a nice atmosphere and the room is comfortable. Good place to stay probably deserves 2 1/2 stars.

Don´t bother if you don´t like rude unhelpful staff and a poor breakfast. Do bother if you would like a central location in the historic and interesting old town in an olde worlde hotel. I have just struggled down the stairs with a heavy suitcase under the lazy gaze of the young, fit man who is the receptionist. Didn´t bother to help!! Very poor. However, if you want a similar style hotel with fantastic helpful service then go a couple of blocks to the family-run Hotel Boutique Portal de Cantuña. What a contrast in service! The Hotel San Fran is often getting poor feedback re their staff but they obviously don´t care!

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a quiet room away from the noisy street. Also one with light as many rooms don...

This is an utterly delightful hotel, brilliantly located in the heart of the historic district of Quito. Originally, it was a grand Spanish house and most of the old features have been preserved so it is a fascinating historical snapshot. Approached through some wrought iron gates from Sucre avenue, a short passageway leads you into a charming courtyard with rooms arranged round it on two floors. The courtyard itself has a fountain, comfortable chairs, tables and two useful if slightly ancient computers for the use of guests. In wet weather the roof is pulled across to make the area useable at all times. Rooms vary a lot. The further back and up (the hotel stretches back from the courtyard) the quieter they are. I would avoid the rooms on the ground floor round the courtyard as groups are often leaving very early in the morning and it can be noisy. Also, avoid room 3 as it is immediately above a music shop which starts playing very loud music early afternoon and goes on till closing time which is quite late.

This is not a 5 star hotel so don't expect super plush fittings etc. However, the rooms are all a decent size with good showers, comfortable beds, satellite TVs and Wifi for those who can't do without the net.

There is a wonderful view of the city from the very top of the hotel. Staff are excellent. Friendly and very helpful. We would always want to stay here if visiting Quito. Room costs are very economical.

The only reason I haven't given this hotel 5 stars is the breakfast which is very basic indeed. Given the very low cost of the rooms I would rather have paid an extra $5 or so and had a little more choice. What you get is good fruit juice, nice scrambled eggs and slightly old and therefore tough bread rolls with butter and jam. The jam is good. Best not to think about the "coffee". For a country that grows coffee beans it was unbelievably bad: just brown coloured water with a very dubious flavour. You can pay for extras such as ham, bacon, fresh fruit ranging from $1.50 to $3.50.

Room Tip: Any room from number 22 upwards should be good. 29 is a suite and lovely. Very high numbers should...

This was the first hotel I stayed in while travelling South America. We booked it based on location and good reviews and the fact it was in a safe neighbourhood. My friends arrived by land before me and checked in and informed reception I'd be arriving at 1am when my flight landed. When I arrived the man on reception didn't speak English and had no idea about my reservation. Luckily my driver stayed with me to translate but the receptionist still had no idea. Finally I found the room which was spacious and clean and included towels. Bad points were there were no windows, it was a bit like a cave, the bathroom just had a blurred glass screen so you could hear everything and the door wasn't very secure although it was safe in the hotel. Breakfast was simple bread and jam with scrambled eggs and drinks. The location was good with a supermarket next door and plenty of sights within walking distance. The hotel was nice but if I came back to Quito I'd look for somewhere slightly cheaper.

The room and bathroom were nothing extraordinary but livable. The free breakfast of tea/coffee, juice, bread, and eggs was good. I had two complaints. One, wifi was only available in common areas. Two, there are doors separating areas of the hotel that are very loud when closed during the night. One door was right outside my room.
