“Great environment!”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

The hostel is a great place to meet other travelers and get a good nights rest. They offer breakfast 7:30-10am. They have good bread, fruit, fresh juice, and yogurt for $2.60. You can add eggs, pancakes or bacon for $1. The also offer dinner that needs to be ordered by 5pm. The rooftop terrace has an amazing view of the city. I spent one afternoon up there just mesmerized by the view. It's beautiful.

The evening staff is friendly and helpful. There is one individual who works in the morning that is extremely unfriendly. At first I thought it was just me but I overheard other travelers complaining about that person as well. The last day of our stay that person had an attitude adjustment so maybe they were just having a few bad days.

Truthfully the condition of the hostel isn't great, the rooms are extremely basic and rustic but very clean. If you're to chose this place it's because of the good vibe that runs through the rooftop terrace. I really loved staying here because you're surrounded by so many great people and it's in a good area of town. I didn't mind walking up all of the stairs to the terrace or my room but would have appreciated a staff member helping me with my bag to my room.

Room Tip: Get a room with a private bathroom!

I was recommended this place by two people so I went ahead and moved here. First you need to go to reception on level 5, walking all those flies of stairs after any type of trip is just unwelcome.

The view of the terrace seems to be the only selling point. Prices are more expensive than many other similar type of hostels and they don't include breakfast. If you want breakfast you pay $3 for a piece of bread and some fruits. You can just walk outside and get much more for $1.5

Some of the prices for the rooms are just ridiculous, specially for what you're getting.

Rooms are just depressing, most of the ones I saw didn't have any windows. The one I stayed at had a weird smell coming from the safe box they use.

A simple of request like changing beds, even though it was emptied, was also denied. This has to be the most unfriendly place I've stayed at in my travels.

Met some friendly travelers here but you can find those at any other hostel.

Room Tip: None - just find another hostel

You really feel like one big happy family at Secret Garden. I was in Banos and I met some fellow backpackers and they suggested that if I go to Quito, I should stay at Secret Garden. They were right. The beds were super comfortable and clean, there are ample bathrooms throughout the building. Very quirkly layout with lots of art and wall drawings. But the best part of the hostel is the rooftop scene. Free tea , coffee and water as well as the choice to opt in to meals during the day. The meals are very moderately priced (between 1$ and 4$ USD) and during breakfast or dinner, it is the social event of the day. Everyone congregates and enjoys their meal as well as shares stories of their adventures. They also arranged car service to take me back to the airport for my flight home. I would definitely suggest staying here if you want a nice clean reliable stay with the option to meet people and eat great food. The location is great as well, in the heart of Old Town Quito.

All in all, would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Beautiful colonial house in old town Quito.
Rooftop terrace had amazing views of Quito.
Rooms were small but clean and comfortable and reasonably priced.
I'd definitely stay there again and recommend it to others.

Rooftop view is beautiful, there are always people up there so you'll be able to find someone to chat to. Dorms were clean enough, so were the bathrooms. It's a busy place but felt safe enough. There are slightly cheaper options close by but this isn't expensive really for a dorm bed, I thought it was worth it. Hot water a bit inconsistent but good enough. Good wifi. Usually quiet enough to sleep - common areas shut at 11.
There's a $5 shuttle service to the other, remote, secret garden hostel at Cotopaxi BUT this only runs on Tuesdays. If there are 4 of you going you can arrange it for $5 each on another day, but I wasn't so lucky!
No kitchen to use and the breakfast was nice - good fruit every morning - but perhaps a teeny bit expensive...but convenient!

Room Tip: Otavalo dorm is close to the terrace and has wifi. Convenient for breakfast/nipping back to room to...

I started my stay in another Hotel but I came and looked at the Secret Garden. What a great backpackers community and fantastic vibe! The music could be turned down a notch or two. Hard to talk to the person next to you. One night we started a fire in a wheel barrow. Everyone gathered around and talked for hours.
The dorms had fantastic size lockers and a lamp on each bed to read without disturbing anyone else. The showers were hot and the bathroom basket was cleaned out daily, sometimes twice a day. They had shower rugs to place on the floor. They supplied 24 hour coffee with milk and drinking water that you can refill your bottle with.
Their food, I thought can be better. But you are free to go elsewhere.
The staff was great! However, the very narrow and steep stairs with backpacks or luggage is a very tight fit. Just make sure you ask for some help, if you need it.

We stayed in Ecuador for three-weeks and during the time, Secret Garden Quito served as our home base. The staff at SG organized an AMAZING trip for the Jungle for us, as well as a week in SG Cotopaxi. Florian is very helpful. Food was delicious and affordable. Views were unbeatable. Quito is not the safest city, but SG Quito had 24/7 security and was in a beautiful and safe part of town. Hot showers, free wifi, gorgeous city views and great service. I give the highest recommendation.
