“Great all-round hostel!”
Reviewed December 26, 2012

This hostel has a great atmosphere, located in old town Quito with views over the city from the rooftop deck. Staff were very friendly and accommodating, great adventure/day trip booking office on sight called Carpe Diem with good value trips.. Dorm rooms were ok, comfortable beds, showers toilet facilities were a little poor in some of the rooms. Great food & atmosphere. A good experience..

The only saving grace this hostel has are its friendly and helpful staff. Everything else is just bad. The rooms are freezing at night and even during the day, with only one blanket provided. The shower was truly awful and the bar was so bad for a hostel. We went up during happy hour and they had no spirits left, no vodka, no whiskey, nothing. Their offer of a free shot with a beer for happy hour is therefore null and void. Ridiculous. Do not stay here.

We were recommended this hostal and I would never recommend it to anyone else. There were some issues to begin with as they have a curfew.. what? As well as one of our friends "worked" here and was told they would get free lodging and the "lodging" they gave them was disgusting, men sharing crap rooms with women, and the bathroom unspeakable.

Hostel has good location in near Old Town. We appreciated that it had two en suite rooms with one or two beds. The two rooms where we stayed were quiet. Rooms had a little locking box that where we put our valuables with a small lock (brought from home.) Also liked that the hostel offered reasonably priced breakfasts and suppers on its covered roof top patio. Most of the guests are back-packers, but we are over 60 and did not feel out of place or unwelcome. Hostel held one bag for us at no cost for a week while we traveled out of Quito.

This is a hostel but also has private rooms....bare bones accomodation, very clean, free WiFi, and laundress in the building. This is a colonial building at the edge of the old historic district and near the Basilica. Free coffee and purified water all day, breakfast $.80, Set dinner under $4 with good wine...food is organic with a vegetarian option. Dining is on the covered roof top looking out over the city...View is without peer! After dinner a bonfire is created in a wheelbarrow and a guitar/song fest begins. Private room is $26 for one or two. Travel Service on sidewalk level.

Only drawback is that since it is a colonial building, the rooms are on all of the five levels with colonial era stairs...no handrail, step rises varying in height. You can't peruse the murals while climbing the stairs or you risk life and limb! Hard on the knees, stellar on the eyes, tastebuds, pocketbook and friendliness.

Room Tip: Private rooms are 2nd level up dorms on all other levels. I heard NO complaints from anyone about t...

Hostel is just about ok, very safe with 24 hour security and rooftop terrace is nice during the day to chill out on, however, the staff are utterly useless, they are volunteers or backpackers getting a cheap rate to do a few hours on reception, no idea of the local area or Ecuador in general, more interested in checking Facebook or deciding what song to put on next. This makes things difficult when trying to settle your room bill for example as the staff member is so distracted he has to come in to the dorm at midnight when everyone else is asleep to wake you up and ask you for an extra $2 as he undercharged you earlier and 'cant balance the cash box'. Hostel is also extremely noisy, noise from the terrace travels all around the hostel and the rooftop terrace at night serves as a private rave for the staff working there. Not many restaurants nearby and the prices of food and beer at this hostel are very high, portions are also meager. Try somewhere else, there are plenty around, better and cheaper.

The best part of this place was the rooftop patio that overlooked Quito. It was a great view late at night or as you were enjoying breakfast and coffee in the morning. We stopped over in Quito only one night, so we didn't get too much of a feel for it. Our limited experience at Secret Garden was a positive one.
