“Friendly retreat”
Reviewed August 5, 2013 via mobile

Casa joaquin is a friendly, clean and charming hotel. The owner and staff were very helpful and I enjoyed breakfast very much. Rooms were elegant and comfortable. Wifi didnt work very well in the rooms but was fine in the common areas downstairs. I didn't find the area too safe, with plenty of dodgy characters in the adjacent streets so I would recommend caution although there's plenty of police on the main square

Hi Marc, thank you for you review.

It was great to have you with us. Like you noticed we want to have everything as perfect as possible. From the start of our business we want to assure a quick and liable internet.

Therefore we made a contract with the best internet provider for a high speed connection.I am sorry to hear that you encountered difficulties with the wireless in the room. If you had mentioned it I could have informed you that we already where busy to look for a solution.

Because of the thickness of the walls of this colonial house some areas did indeed encounter a lower connection. The only solution that came up was to put extra routers. Now we have at least one for every floor with a good internet connection everywhere in the building.

About the area around our hotel, the Mariscal is the liveliest but at the same time safest neighbourhood of Quito. There are police man, street guards and cameras everywhere. For that reason and for the easiness to get everywhere in this marvellous city we have chosen this location for our hotel. WISH you a safe return home and looking forward to see you soon again.

Kind regards.

Service is this place's top feature: When we arrived, we were allowed to leave our car as we went and compared prices with neighbouring hotels.
Besides offering a very personal and excellent service, the rooms are comfortable, silent and very clean. They offer good value for your money and the services work well (internet and cable). I use the internet to work and could use a small office space.
We end up staying at this friendly place for a few days and felt right at home. Unfortunately we had to switch hotels for a few days too because when we arrived, it was already booked... we were very happy to return :)

We just had the pleasure of spending three nights at Casa Joaquin. What a lovely, charming place. Originally built in the early 1900s as a family home in the newer (at that time) part of Quito just north of the Old Town Center, this place has loads of history and character. It has been completely renovated, very well-done and tasteful. The decor is stylish, but not at all over the top; it is very comfortable and homey while achieving elegance at the same time.

It is also the perfect size, in my opinion. 13 guest rooms plus a full apartment in the back of the property, with a bedroom, living room and full kitchen along with a private garden terrace. The apartment is perfect for long term stays of a week, several weeks or months.

Breakfast is a treat; along with the full European continental breakfast, each day guests are also served a specialty of the house. On our mornings we were treated to crepes, French toast and a savory pastry. A serious Italian espresso machine means that you can also order a wonderful, authentic cappuccino or espresso.

Adjacent to the dining room is a small, cozy bar that is a nice place to have a drink in the evening. The red phone-booth door to the WC closet (bathroom) is an unexpected, fun and quirky touch.

The staff are excellent - knowledgeable and helpful, while respecting your privacy and giving you as much or as little service as you desire. Rooms are extremely tasteful and comfortable, with excellent European bathrooms.

The neighborhood, La Mariscal, is fun and lively. This is the less conservative, younger and more bohemian Quito neighborhood. All around Casa Joaquin are a wide choice of international restaurants and bars, particularly two blocks down where a corner plaza is a very happening spot in the evening, filled with street cafes, restaurants, and people walking around. Only a few blocks to the trolle system that will take you straight down into Old Town Quito, the location is easily accessible to other parts of the city as well.

All in all, Casa Joaquin offers everything you would want in a boutique hotel, and we greatly enjoyed our stay there. Thank you, Dirk, for the hospitality!

We just returned from Quito and what a great decisión we made to stay at Casa Joaquin. As other reviews have stated the service is the best that you will find at any hotel. Dirk and Bolívar went above and beyond to make sure that we were satisfied with their recommendations and all were spot on. Make sure to book a tour of the city with Francisco, he is extremely knowledgeable and interesting and an excellent guide!

We stayed in number 12 and the suite was spacious, well decorated and extremely clean. Breakfast was fresh delicious and abundant and served with excellent style.

I will surely be returning to Quito and I would never consider any other hotel. Casa Joaquin was truly an excellent choice!

much good has been said about the place and we can fully confirm it after 4 nights, every bit of it. some details:

the service was excellent and we would give 6 stars for it if tripadvisor allowed it.

the area might look a little dodgy at night but even the lonely planet advises travelers to take a taxi at night in any part of quito. we felt safer here than in other parts of the city as there are cameras everywhere in this neighbourhood and security at strategic corners.

if we ever return to quito, this is the place where we would like to stay.

thank you, dirk and bolivar, for the great time we had!

Room Tip: we stayed in room 33 and were happy with it

We stayed here as an alternative to the impersonal Marriott and are so glad we did. Dirk and the crew went above and beyond to ensure our stay was memorable, even getting up at 3:30am to help load luggage into the taxi! If we ever have the good fortune to return to Quito we'll be returning to Casa Joaquin.

The owner went far and beyond his call of duty when he took his time to assist our party with anything from directions to making calls.

The hotel is in a great location, in the historic district near the city center witch has everything you need.

This boutique hotel offers beautiful rooms for a great price! All newly renovated, the rooms are above and beyond what one might expect.

The breakfast is always plentiful and someone is always available to request eggs as you like 'em :)

Highly recommend this hotel for your stay in quito!
