We took Tren Crusero from Guayaquil to Quito, finding it a true 5 star adventure where each day was better than the last! (Go from south to north, though.) Train travels up the Avenue of Volcanoes, taking passengers from coastal plains, through banana, cocao and rose plantations. The volcanoes loom large and the big train windows and open air observation car bring you up close! Our guides and train personnel were superb and all folks worked hard to make it a great experience. Each day, travelers get off for meals and lodging. Tren Crucero has selected very nice haciendas for nights. The travel through the Highlands was great and let us see things and cultures we otherwise wohld have completely missed.

Even if you don't do the entire "cruise" from Quito to Guayaquil (4 days, 3 nights) you should include a segment of Ecuador's new luxury train, the Tren Crucero, on your visit. We took the one-day route from from Lasso to Riobamba, touring a large rose farm near Latacunga (who knew that Ecuador was one of the world's largest supplier of roses? Or that the Russians prefer super-long stems?) and stopping for lunch in a boutique hotel in Ambato.

Stand on the "verandah" car at the end, watch the locals smile and wave as you pass, and hope that Volcano Chimborazo will cast off its cloud cover. Then order up a one of the best coffee mochas you'll ever drink (non-alcoholic drinks and snacks included), delivered to your table by friendly waiter (seats are organized around small tables, which guarantees a convivial experience).

Each night, you'll be put up at a classy accommodation along the way.

This is a great way to begin or end a trip to the Galapagos, allowing you to see more of a country that truly has "something for everyone." You'll be tempted to return and spend more time in the highlands, particularly if hiking, biking, horseback riding and hacienda-hopping is something that interests you. Not to mention the local culture.

[Another route -- not part of the "Crucero"--is the Tren de la Libertad, which runs north of Quito, from Ibarra to Salinas, a town whose residents are of African descent. Other trains duplicate segments of the Crucero, like the Nariz del Diablo (Devil's Nose), which takes a zig zag route from Alausi and back. These are worth a look if you have less time. For a future trip, I am hoping for the line to Cuenca to be restored! ]

Beautiful vistas and just simply a wonderful ride. The ride and back takes about six hours and is includes a lunch an ethnic performance and dancing. What a perfect way to round off a trip to Ecuador!

Many people from Europe or other places where travelling in train might be very common but the ecudorian train has something special due to the type of territory that goes trough, visiting the amazing Andes by this train will be an amazing experience.
