“The PERFECT "Home Away From Home" in Quito!”
Reviewed August 28, 2009

Judy, Sergio and their staff made our family trip to Quito absolutely wonderful! Our group of 6 adults and 6 children was treated superbly during our stay at the lovely and well appointed Hostal de La Rabida.

Our comfortable rooms were perfect for the couples and the groups of children. The dining room was delightful with a delectable array of menu choices for breakfast and dinner--all delicious and well prepared. When we had an early morning departure, we had "breakfast bags" to take with us. How cozy it was to be able to spend time in the living room of our "home away from home" in front of a roaring fire, with a glass of wine.

Judy attended to our every need during our stay in Quito. She arranged for reliable airport transfers and set up our tours to the Equator and Colonial Quito with vans and tour guides who spoke English and were very knowledgeable. When we needed dinner reservations, she recommended a restaurant and made our arrangements. No matter what we required, Judy and her accommodating staff were there to make sure we were well taken care of.

Our stay at Hostal de La Rabida before and after our Galapagos Adventures was perfect in every way. What a special way for us to share with our children and grandchildren the exciting city of Quito.

We all felt completely at home and well cared for in every way.

Apparently the Hostal La Rabida has fairly recently changed hands so that when I read the reviews before our trip maybe it was ok. We were very disappointed with our stay there-so much so that the local tour operator who was looking after us found us another hotel for the rest of our stay.

The rooms were very small and the bed very hard. There was no hot water and the tiles in the shower were so slippery it was positively dangerous. Breakfast was mediocre to say the least and dinner was better than nothing. The morning we left we had an early start at 7am. According to the hotel info breakfast was supposed to start at 6.30am but in the end the night guard managed to rustle up some toast for us-the cook arrived just as we were leaving!

My family stayed at this hotel when they came to visit me while I was working in Ecuador. I couldn't meet them at the airport and I was nervous about their security while they were in Quito as none of them speak Spanish and they have only traveled in Europe.

Rabida helped them book a car to pick them up at the airport and helped them feel safe and secure during their stay in Quito. They liked their room and were well-satisfied with the experience.

The rooms are very small and the water was not always hot. The noise from the car alarms was disturbing. The common areas are homey and adequate. Breakfast was average, and not included in the price, so beware. Also, If you ask for an extra bottle of water you are charged. The staff was very accomodating and helpful.

I stayed here with a friend for a total of 5 nights, 3 nights while in Quito, 1 night between the Amazon and the Galapagos and 1 night before leaving for Peru. Every time the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They were even able to turn around my laundry in under 10 hours with no extra charge. The rooms are adequate and ours was quite chilly, despite using the room's heater. It also had a slightly musty smell. But it was clean and the bedding was warm. The main area is quite cute and the restaurant was fine although extremely slow, especially for breakfast, which is usually a meal you want quickly. The location was good, in the Mariscal area and very close to tons of restaurants. It was a relatively cheap cab ride to the old quarter as well. I'd definitely stay there again and would recommend it to friends.

"OK" pretty much sums it up. There is very little wrong with this hotel from the courteous staff to the cosy living area and fire. Its in a good location 5 minutes walk from the centre of the Mariscal district.

However, its not particularly special in any way. It reminds me of a dated English B & B. Rooms are all very small, beds reasonable and bathrooms alright. Breakfast is average (check what is included, we were charged extra for choosing the "wrong" breakfast!!) but the restaurant reminded me of eating at my strict great aunts when I was a child.... it serves VERY average Italian food so eat here if you are too tired to go out only!

So, on the whole, not a bad hotel, just not a great one either.

my husband and i stayed for one night.
property was fine, room was ample, staff friendly and courteous.
adjacent area known to be dangerous at time of visit in evenings so was advised not to roam at night.
we had 2 twin beds pushed together to create a full/queen which was okay. saw that some others had a real queen so i would suggest that you ask for that if available.

  • Liked — central enough and good experience overall
  • Disliked — i would stay in old quito next time
