“Don't miss the lovely little chapel inside”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

The reviews I've seen don't mention that this is a Gothic structure, which explains some of the differences between the Basilica and most Ecuadoran churches. As other reviewers mentioned, the gargoyles are terrific -- how cool to use tortoises, sea lions and a peacock instead of the usual fare. Inside, there is a delightful, even playful little chapel with all sorts of colorful design features. There's a sign that suggests it's for prayer rather than tourist visitation, but no one minds if you take a look. I enjoyed the trip -- by elevator and then by metal ladder -- to the tower, as much for the fun of getting there as for the views.

“Not that special inside, but climbing up towers okay.”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

This was ot as impressive as several churches in town and if I had skipped it, I would not have missed anything. But, you are allowed to climb around on the outside and up towers. If you are not wary of heights (or poor safety standards) get a ticket to go upstairs and climb around.

“Amazing views from the top”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

This is a really impressive piece of architecture in the outside using local animals instead of the standard gargoyles. Not so great inside. However, It's definitely worth a visit for the small entrance fee if you have a head for heights as you can take a lift to the 3rd floor and then climb the ladders or spiral staircases to the very top for the most amazing 360 degree views of the city. This is not for small children or those with walking difficulties or vertigo. There is something quite bizarre about being behind the clock when it strikes the hour! Don't expect the gold leaf everywhere that you see in other Ecuadorian churches, but some of the stained glass is pretty impressive.

“Great gargoyles”
Reviewed April 6, 2013

I'm all for a church that goofs with gargoyles and uses local animals instead of fantasy monsters. The rest of the building is impressive too, since it dominates the skyline of Quito (at least from other high points).

The architecture is stunning, some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. We listened to the choir and were blown away with the beauty of their voices.
The alter and statues are second to none.
A must see!
