Visited the Basilica today for the first time while showing friends around Quito. A breathtaking gothic church. Beautiful stained glass windows, shrines to the Virgin of the different provinces of Ecuador, as well as to the different countries of Central and South America. The outside of the basilica has gargoyles in the shape of different animals from Ecuador, such as ant eaters, tortoises, pumas, iguanas, etc. I highly recommend that if your are in Quito, that you visit the basilica.

We climbed right up top of the gothic tower which requires nerves of steel! Steep ladders from the roof make for thrilling experience. Every level has beautiful views - either of the church interior or of surrounding Quito. How high you climb is up to you and it's well worth it even if you don't make it to the top (majority of the climb is quite easy with normal stone steps). A great way to spend an hour!

Amazing architecture and beautiful stained glass windows. Beautiful fresh flowers decorated the interior of this amazing and historical building while walking around with a sense of wonder and awe.

A beautiful church on the scale of many in of Rome. The walk over the old inner roof and scaling the ladders to the top will take your breath away.

Truly a church you can climb all over. There are in fact two entrances (and two entrance fees). To obtain the most from this church, it is probably best to view the church fist at ground level. While the interior is not as glamorous as most other churches in the city, its stark gothic architecture can be fully appreciated, before being clambered over. Be sure to check out the chapel at the rear, restore a sense of colour before embarking upon the climb upwards (which begins at a separate entrance around the corner). From this entrance, you can opt to use the stairs (a little over 200 of them), or the lift. Using the stairs (one way or the other), offers opportunities to exit onto outside platforms as you ascend (or descend), and also offers opportunities to visit areas that might otherwise be missed if the lift was exclusively used. At the top level (of the lift), you are confronted with the possibility of remaining at this level; climbing the clock tower; or walking the plank, which is actually a fairly sturdy wooden walkway across the inner roof of the church from one end to the other, where a very steep set of stairs awaits you, and invites you to climb even higher, to the outside of the rear tower. Those suffering vertigo may now however, have real issues to deal with. There awaits another two sets of very steep, narrow steps, offering the willing, to climb even further up into the open tower. Certainly not a feat for the faint hearted. Interestingly though, the descent back down does appear to be a little easier to accomplish than the ascent.
Having endured all this, and having walked the plank back, I would suggest a left turn into the shop, and then left again to ascend some (normal) steps up to an absolutely delightful café where one can take time to have a drink, restore calmness to the nerves, and enjoy the panoramic view (behind glass).
