I had read many, many scary things about the safety of this place. Not only should you take a taxi because you are likely to be mugged in surrounding neighborhoods, but it also looked rather complicated to find the top.
We hired someone to take us up, wait for us, and then take us to the Basilica back downtown. It was worth the money. The views are nice. The entrance to the actual inside didn't seem worth it. But during the day, for two Americans with a taxi, it was fine.

Just a few minutes away from the old city, can take a taxi or bus to go here to this hill, just go early on the afternoon, because later it will be cold, located on tp of the hill, where you can see either way, north, south, east or west side of the city's a few stores from locals Indians where you can bargain and get some souvenirs, but, don't forget, you have bargain....

Our bus DID go here, but it was booked with Celebrity cruises on the way to the galapagos, so I'm not sure which company we took.

It's pretty quick- take a look, be inspired, shop a little. Maybe 30 mins. I don't recall there being facilities.

I loved being at this place. It was just another great stop along our half day bus tour of Quito. It was part of the experience, like visiting similar sites in other countries and cities.

They had shops/stands to buy merchandise from, just like every tourist stop on the way. You will find cheaper and better places elsewhere, but if you aren't stopping elsewhere, then do buy here. It's basically the same kind of stuff at each place, just variations on the theme, with some quality differences.

One reviewer mentioned that it is dangerous at night. There are definitely dangerous aspects to Quito and this did not seem like a city to visit alone and certainly don't travel at night. For example - In the town the guards had assault rifles and there were tanks. It was scary. There was also a casualness to visiting, so I'm not sure what kind of crime there was to worry about.

When we were with the tour, we were not worried and were not advised to take caution or worry, other than the standard pick-pockets. So, I think it's more dangerous if you are on your own- we didn't even know to be worried until after and reading more about the place, and then of course, seeing those guards!

Also, there is a nearby volcano that is active off/on. Be aware of this when you plan travel.

The ride up the mountain is an adventure. We got the good advice to take a taxi and have the taxi wait and bring you back downtown. The view of the city and mountains is spectacular. From down below, you can always see Mary watching over the city. I love it. This is the only statue of The Virgin Mary where she has wings. There are a few tiny shops/booths.

La Virgen en Quito is a must-visit and worth the time. A great photo opportunity. Be careful of the surrounding neighborhoods as they did not appear to be 100% safe.
