tHE LOCATION of this sanctuary to begin with is just spectacular, you could see it from the top of a mirador down on a closed valley. Is located on the Conquerors via, the road that the spanish conquerors went to discover the Amazon river. The church itself is a most to see, wonderful is the word.

From Mariscal, it's enough to get to the Guapulo Mirador (Lookout). Take Av. Francisco de Orellana up the hill to its eastern terminus. You should see the Hotel Quito. Walk around it. If you get lost ask around.

The view from the top is pretty cool, bringing into view a whole different part of Quito than the central part. Looking down, you can see the domes of Guapulo Church. If you want something extra, walk down Camino de Orellana into the town of Guapulo proper. This winding road is the original route that Orellana took at the very beginning of an expedition to descend the Amazon River. From the mirador, there is also a stair case that connects to Camino de Orellana.

Once in Guapulo, check out the church (which hasa statue of Orellana), stop in a cafe for a bite. Also, if you walked down don't think you have to climb back up. From the church take the road 100m down to Av. de los Conquistadores. From here you can catch a bus or shared van that will drop you off in La Floresta or further.

Being so well located, there's no reason not to take the short ride down to the old church for a walk around.

I speak spanish so getting to Guapulo wasn't too much of a problem; however, recently the bridge connecting Guapulo to Cumbaya was condemned which makes Guapulo more of a pain to get to and it isn't exactly the nicest neighborhood...

Great place to go at day or night; specially at night you can find little hidding places to eat, listen underground concerts, etc, etc.
