I didn't get to stay at Cafe Cultura, but I did have dinner there. Service in Ecuador may not always meet North American standards, yet I found the staff at Cafe Cultura very attentive and very professional. I love that the chef came out to help serve - very nice touch! I had a beautiful shrimp ceviche (which is delivered several times a week from the coast), then a great piece of beef with vegetable which were both perfectly cooked. Their desserts are also divine with my fellow diners enjoying both tiramisu and apple strudel. Such a cozy spot is a building with so much character. I will definitely be back!

We stayed here on two separate occasions as bookends to our Galapagos trip and were disappointed. The creaky floors was an understatement as other guests arrived at midnight and woke us up as if they were right outside our room. We had to leave for the airport at 5:30am and felt so bad we would have woken others with our footfall. Service was lackluster, as an example: opening the locked gate at street level was treated as an inconvenience. Rooms were dusty and no hot water one morning. Location was convenient for more local color than the Marriott.

Our family of 12 stayed at Cafe Cultura two different times in 10 different rooms. Each room had its own personality. Rooms in the back courtyard with double digit numbers are quieter, but the quirky charm of the rooms in the main building made up for the street noise. Very convenient location, close to mercados, El Ejido park, restaurants in Foch Plaza, great pastry and chocolate shops, and the trole lines. Very helpful staff, excellent security, lovely gardens, and good breakfasts.

Dear Helen,

Many thanks for your input and it is great to know that you enjoyed your time with us.

The whole of the neighborhood where 95% of the hotels in Quito are located is under improvement by the municipality. You see, they are grounding the wires, changing the pavements, and improving the street surface altogether aiming to in a few months convert this very touristic area into the best area in town.

Looking forward to hearing from you in the future and wishing you the best in 2013.

All the Best,

László

We liked the eclectic decor in the restaurant but the food was just decent. I would go back except that the waiter disappeared for about 45 minutes after we received our food. We had to chase someone down to get and pay our bill. It was not peak time but maybe checking to se if we needed anything would be nice. We only ate here - we did not sleep here.

Dear Cinda,

Thank you for your input, it would be great to know the date that you were at Café Cultura so that I could overlook the time tables and identify who was on shift during your dinner with us and conduct the proper follow up in the way that person should perform with clients.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

We would not recomend this Hotel, it has old world charm and old world facilities. The floors were awful we were kept awake all night with people moving, the carpet on the stairs is old and dirty. Our bathroom was enourmous and romantic with Candles but cold at night and you could not see a thing with the dim lighting. Hot water was non exsistant on the first night, and after getting dressed to go to reception to complain again, the following morning (no phone in the room to communicate to the front desk) there was finally hot water by 11 a.m to late for us as we were out sightseeing. The lack of phone in the room (all other rooms had a phone) was never explained. We canceled out second night there and moved somewhere else with hot water and no sqeeks!

Also a charming typical Ecuadorian Hotel with delightfull staff. Our advice - hunt around you can do better!

Room Tip: If you want a good room go somewhere else

Dear Liz,

It appears to be that you stayed in a room with a vertical jacuzzi shower or for a reason that I still don't understand, you couldn't operate well that equipment and therefore you were only obtaining cold water. It is virtually impossible that the hot water supply would run out in Café Cultura since it is a redundant system with gas and electricity. There is nothing I can do about the squeaky floors since it is a 2 and half centuries old listed and historical house, meaning that I cannot change the original features of the building at all.

Every room in the hotel has a telephone and we have 24 hours receptionists, so you could have informed this problem to the reception desk in order for them to firstly supply you with a telephone and secondly to show you how to operate the shower. I must apologize on behalf of your predecessor in the room, it seems that she fell in love with our telephone and our little description of how to operate the shower.

Hoping that you had a wonderful trip back and wishing you the best,

László

The people are very friendly, service is great and the location is about a 10min walk to a lovely square full of bars and restaurants. We also felt very safe, as the front doors were always locked with a gate. The only issue is the extremely squeaky floors- if someone is in a room above you, say goodbye to sleep. Overall, the hotel has a rustic old-fashioned feel to it and is very beautiful. Highly recommend!

This is a difficult hotel to review as it so full of quirks. The hotel is in an old building with wooden floors that squeak loudly at the slightest movement and it is quite dark so you need to watch your step.
We stayed in three different rooms on four occasions on a recent trip to Ecuador and each room was very different with different discomforts! eg one only had a bath, one only had a curtain between the room and bathroom, one had a bed right next to a wall so you had to crawl into bed from the bottom of the bed etc etc However the rooms and hotel have character if that is what you are looking for.
I liked the location and I found the staff very helpful. I think I just got used to the hotel after coming back to it each time!

Room Tip: Sort of like a boarding house or hostel

Dear RoundtheWorld,

A million thanks for your lovely comments.

Indeed, the house where we currently operate is a listed building part of the National Heritage of Ecuador and therefore it goes by a very special set of rules, which limits our capabilities to change things as we would like.

Currently, we are in the process of fully rebuilding, restoring, renovating and enhancing from scratch one of Quito´s most important manor houses. There, in a short time we will open a world class boutique hotel. Hopefully, the next time you come our way we can receive you there as our guest of honor. Please don´t doubt on contacting us for these arrangements.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

László
