So interesting to see where this amazing artist lived and how he worked. Best part was seeing him create a painting before your eyes and seeing his workshop.

I don't know how we missed this on our visit last year, but I am so glad it was at the top of our list last week. Absolutely wonderful museum and tour of personal home. If you really appreciate art, I would recommend getting a private guide. We utilized the services of the employees and I thought they did a good job, but the place is so fascinating, I would have really appreciated a personal guide.

Osvaldo Guayasamin may be the most famous painter of the 20th century in Ecuador. He was very influenced by Picasso and Goya, especially with regard to political chronicles about human suffering expressed in painting. His early work was realistic and a bit dark, and became more abstract as time went on. Finally he settled on painting the faces of his people, expressing his empathy with people suffering oppression, poverty, hunger and injustice. Guayasimin's home has been turned into a museum, and it is well worth a visit. It is a stunningly interesting home architecturally speaking, and the art and furnishings are historically interesting and personal. One can feel the man's presence in this museum dedicated to keeping his art and life alive. Then there is also a huge chapel with gigantic paintings, an eternal flame dedicated to human life lived in dignity. All worth visiting and quite memorable, though the paintings seem too repetitive near the end of his life. He was financially very successful. The genre was popular, and he did not diverge at the end of his life from the faces in permanent suffering which clearly made him a rich man. That said, he made a major impact on his people, who hold him in reverence.

Slightly out of town but the museo casa was an incredible view of a life well lived - besides being calm and peaceful and idyllic! La Capilla De Hombre was an amazing building and memorial to a great body of work. Make sure you see the basement and huge condor on the horse.

Do not miss this remarkable opportunity to see the legacy of a great artist. Of indigenous and mestizo descent, he captured the experience of those in the way of politics and development better than anyone I've encountered. His Temple of Man must be visited, shared, and known.
