This museum was within walking distance of our hotel. It was free which surprised us.We spent two hours there before we had to leave for the airport and felt it was worth the visit.I would say visit this if you are in Quito.

Clearly laid out, the outstanding collection of gold artifacts shows variations between the different groups that made them. Sculptures and pottery are also intriguing, plus there are some interesting oil paintings upstairs. Staff is friendly and helpful. Entrance is free; we would happily have put something in a dontation box but there wasn't one.

Exposition is reach and very well organized.
Inca's gold collection is simply amazing.
Make sure you reserve 2-3 hours for this museum.

Possibly the best collection of Pre Columbian Ecuadorian artifacts we have ever seen anywhere. Well explained in Spanish and also very well displayed. It was incredible to watch how the quality of the pottery degraded as population kept on increasing. The Gold collection and its significance with respect to the difference of outlook toward Gold between Native Ecuadorians and Spaniards are notable. Ancient metallurgy existed in Ecuador and we tend to forget it today. All in all, a great place to visit. Entrance is free. There is a contemporary section and a Christianity section as well. Those can be skipped. The museum is housed in Casa de la Cultura which can be reached easily by public transport. The Red Eco Via has a stop called "Casa de la Cultura" right in front of it.
