“Couldn't locate!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 14, 2012

Although this is the museum that was most recommended, our cab driver never was able to really locate it so we never had a chance to see it! Disappointing.

“Hx of S.America”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2012

Free museum with helpful staff and fascinating exhibits tracing the ancient hx. of S. /america and Ecuador in particular. Well worth a few hours for those who are interested. Many of the panels are bilingual Spanish/English but some are not, so it helps to know some Spanish.

“Very quiet on a Sunday”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 1, 2012

We toured though the museum on a Sunday afternoon and there were just a handful of visitors there. The museum has excellent examples of artifacts from around Ecuador. They had some dioramas showing indigenous people and how their communities were constructed and organized. We thought this was very interesting and great for visualizing how the people lived. They also have a gold exhibit that is guarded by security, they keep close watch on visitors in this area. Upstairs, they also display some religious art in a large gallery. The museum was free, so it was a nice way to spend an afternoon.

“short and sweet”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2012

First of all, this museum is now owned by the city and no longer goes by the "Museo del Banco Central." This makes it hard to find, because the tourist periodicals still refer to it as the " Museo del Banco Central." The building is a multi-purpose, modernistic one right on the corner, and the entrance is about 90 degrees to the left of the "Teatro" entrance. That said, the price is right. ( free ). The exhibits are partly bilingual ( Eng. and Sp.), which makes this place more helpful than most. The information and artifacts from the early indigenous peoples to the time of the Conquistadores was helpful in teaching me enough history to understand who did what and when and to make sense of the great variety of indigenous peoples. By the time I got to the church art, however, I was ready to leave.

“Wonderful overview of Ecuadorian history”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 17, 2012

This is a wonderful overview of Ecuadorian history, combining displays of objects, dioramas, and placards with explanations -- all in both Spanish and English. And it's free!
