It’s a bit different to the other plazas de las armas in cities like Lima etc. It’s a really nice plaza and starting point for free walking tours, like strawberry, one I did and really liked! From this square you can visit a lot of churches and the streets are full of life, specially on Sunday.

On Mondays they have the "Change of Guard" which is very interesting with the "Granaderos" in their traditional attire.

I visited Colombia and Ecuador in Jan.2018. Loved the experience going through the rain forests and visit to Quito. I went to see the parade at the square, it was very busy and a team of thieves stole my wallet with all my money, credit and ATM cards including my drivers licemce and some other papers.... Don't want you to be scared but please be very careful. At night stay in busy areas and avoid going to side streets and dark areas, I almost got robbed of my camera at night in a park, luckily an off duty traffic cop who happened to be close by saved me.

Tidied. Green. Seating available. Cafés around for light food or lunches etc.
Heard that it is lit up at night, but I was there during the day.

Plaza Grande is the centre of old Quito and the start of any good tour. It includes the main cathedral and Presidential palace and is usually packed with locals and tourists alike.

If you can make it on a Monday at about 11am you’ll see the changing of the Presidential Guard which is worth an icecream and half an hour in the sun. There’s usually a speech from a senior official and a good sized local crowd.

Top tip: be careful with your backpack as the old town’s pickpockets are famous, but don’t over-worry, we didn’t feel threatened at all as long as you’re careful. Also, if you’d like a more relaxed, cooler tour then go in the early evening as the lighting is gorgeous and there are plenty of local restaurants to sit in.

What a lovely plaza! It is large, has flowers and benches, and beautiful trees in full pink bloom. Begun back in 1612 as a packed dirt area, its long history is interesting involving water source, private residences, earthquake of 1627, and its evolution to what it is today. The Catholic Church acquired land on the NE side and built the Cathedral of Quito, and land on the SW side where the Archbishop’s Palace was built. Other buildings emerged and collectively now frame the plaza. A fountain had been in the center, but in 1894 the current monument was conceived, commissioned in 1898, and the fountain was moved to the SW area to make way for the monument. It is affectionately known as the Monument to the Heroes of the Independence. It honors the heroes of the First Cry on August 10, 1809, who called for the fight for their country to gain independence from Spain. The actual war took place from 1820-1822. Visitors are welcome in most of the historic buildings surrounding the plaza. There are street vendors selling little paintings and beautiful scarfs amongst other items, but none hassled us. Very pleasant place to people watch, but just be very careful of pickpockets. We were advised to even remove necklaces as they can be grabbed. It’s probably no more dangerous than any other big city.... we certainly felt safe.

Central Square with a fountain in the middle of the old city. Has a good tourist information store nearby to book Hop-on-hop-off bus tours and get maps etc. Just watch your bags in the square as it is a bit crowded but overall a nice place to walk by.

We learned about the history of the country’s independence and were able to view the presidential palace. We also heard the story about the rooster on top of the church...be sure to ask someone to tell it to you!
