Owner description: Established in 1536 by Franciscan monks, this magnificent architectural masterpiece features a museum in its convent with art from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The church itself is worth a quick walk through as it historically significant and a well used by the community. The adjacent museum is a bit of a bust with rather pedestrian religious art and statutes. During our visit the museum also showcased a rather disturbing collection of nativity scenes.

Another nice church, they all begin to run together after awhile since there are several within a stones throw of each other. It is free to get into all of them and it is worth the stop.

The temple was built between 1536 y 1580. Its architectural features are a mixture of elements, which are baroque and mudejar outstandingly. The result assembles great harmony and beauty. The church sits facing the square which is named the same. The inside is outstanding and very much worth a see.

Don't just visit the church, be sure to visit the museum, which doesn't take that long. Both are impressive and quite ornate with awe-inspiring detail in the gold leaf and design throughout the church. The Ecuadorian religious art (in the museum) offers a different flavor and style than American or Italian depictions and still rivals what you'd see in Rome or Europe. The museum is structurally part of the Franciscan monastery so you may see some monks about since they live in community there. A stairway with additional art near the end of the tour route leads visitors up to the choir loft (if you are already there, do this) that overlooks the whole church from a wonderful perspective. The choir loft is magnificent. (If you can't do steps, the rest of the tour is still worth the trip.)

A beautiful church, similar to those in Spain. Ornate, yet touching at the same time. The side chapels are lovely.
