Owner description: Established in 1536 by Franciscan monks, this magnificent architectural masterpiece features a museum in its convent with art from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

This, we were told, is the largest ecclesiastic building in S America. It stand in a stark but magnificent square, and spans two city blocks. The exterior is awesome, but is the essence of simplicity, with patches of carved stonework seemingly attached to flat white-washed walls. The interior is vast, with a church, a monastery and many cloisters making up the complex, but pride of place goes to the stunning Courtyard ------- beautifully landscaped, and surrounded by a two-story arcade on 3 sides. It now serves as a museum, and we did not have time to actually go round it. Our sight of the church interior was also cut short, but the building and its square made a powerful impression, and I wish I had the time to come back subsequently.

This is the infamous site of the Franciscan monks who dug a tunnel under the edifice to get to the convent next door and have orgies with the drunken nuns, then murdered the babies which resulted and buried their bodies.

Built on the site of an Inca Temple, there are many fables and tales about this church. The interior is a tribute to the artistry of the creators. The museum is very interesting and tells so much about the culture.

Not too over-the-top with the gilt work. We stopped by during mass, and quietly ducked out. Definitely worth the visit.

Quito is known as one the greatest cities to see typical Colonial art;

This Church is unique not only for its artistic value but also for its location and atmosphere.

You will have the opportunity to experience and feel the faith of locals attending the mass.

I have visited maybe 10 times and it is always on my "to-do" list everytime I visit Quito.
