This church was built in 16th century and gleams with elaborate gold leaf work. Apperently 3.5 tons of 18 Karet gold was used in the inlays. The visit of the courtyard and the surrounding quaters of the monastary was impressive.

Facing the large San Francisco Square, this monastery and church is a must place to visit - inside is a quiet court yard and one of the most highly decorated churches in all of Quito - & that is quite a feat...

This church has beautiful art and multiple altars that you must see for yourself. Our tour took us into the catacombs in the basement of the church which was very interesting.

Quito old town may not be that different from other latin american old towns, but its churches are really wonderful, and this one along with Iglesia de la Companía and Santo Domingo are a must see from anyone with a minimum interest in sacred (catholic) art.

I love visting churches and Quito's ones excelled any experience that I had in other latin american churches and many from Europe.

Mannerist in its exterior and Baroque with all its exaggerations in the interior (with some other influences), but quite different from the baroque of the nearby Iglesia de la Compania.

Besides, a small sacred art museum with 2 beautiful cloisters and some man-sized sculptures that seems to be used in Holly Friday (Easter festives).

If you have lucky, you can see some franciscan's monks whistling with birds in the cloisters is such a way that they seem to be communicating with each other.
