Owner description: This Jesuit church is a masterpiece of baroque and Quiteno-colonial art with lavish golden altars and gilded columns, making it one of the most ornate structures in Ecuador.

Having had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the world this Iglesia is a " world treasure ", the splendor unforgettable, and itself is worthy of a visit to Quito

Starting in 1605 it took the Jesuits over 160 years to build. A Latin Cross design, it is one of the richest churches in the Americas . It is a Latin American baroque style with a facade of volcanic grey stone and Solomon Pillars.

In the interior, literally every inch of the altar-pieces, the chapels, the columns and the dome of the transept, the choir and the tribunes is filled with sculptures and ornate carvings of angels, foliage, vines, fruits, birds and caryatids decorated with seven tons of 23 kt gold.

A huge pump organ (over 100 ft wide) still functions for mass services. Labyrinths of catacombs lie underneath the church housing gold Incan treasures and the burial grounds for church and country leaders.

Having lived in Europe for 8 years, and travelled extensively, we have seen a LOT of churches. This ornate beauty is worth the price of admission. The tour is NOT really free, as they certainly would like a tip--but our guide made the church come alive discussing the 16 prophets, the symbolism of the colors, the way Ecuadorian plants and indigenous faces are hidden along the pillars, the one black face not cleaned after a fire, the incredible symmetry--to include a fake staircase at the rear--this is indeed a beauty. (But traveler beware, my husband left his hat in the pew as we chatted with our guide. He went back 5 minutes later, but it was long gone.) Hmmm--even in the Lord's house, be careful.

Ever since I was a child and my mother took me to visit La Compañía de Jesús I felt a great sense of pride¡¡¡¡ The exterior of the church was carved in volcanic stone by the indians following european patterns, however our artisans managed to add native elements . When you go inside you will not believe your eyes ¡¡¡ everything is decorated with gold leaf. The entrance fee is only 3 dollars. It is a visit you should not miss ¡¡¡

Take a look arround this astomishing masterpiece. Allthough there is a fee, it is worth while. The interior is covered with gold in a way you havn't seen before.

Certainly a church to take the breath away with a sense of Majesty and power. This church is well worth paying the entrance fee to see. Shame they do not allow photos inside.
