This hotel was the Mercado Mansion, built by tobacco money. It has been restored to opulence that will delight. Every room is different and elegant. My bed was strewn w/ rose petals the first night, there were even rose petals ijn the toilet..
The staff is friendly and helpful, altho' three postcards they were supposed to have mailed never arrived. There is a bistro, that during my stay we had to ourselves, with good food and attentive service. There is a lovely garden in the back. It was a bit too chilly to enjoy it in February. You feel very safe as hotel is behind locked gate, with buzzer for entrance. A very nice touch is tea at five o'clock, with lovely cookies/cakes..served on the elegant first floor landing. You do have to ask tho..
There are some things to be aware of however. The cab drivers do not know where this hotel is..or if they do, they are confounded by the one-way street. Therefore, I recommend that you definitely avail yourself of the airport pick-up service..even tho' it is much more expensive than a cab ..25$ while a cab would be 5-10. Once you get there, the hotel has a card w/ a small map..mark the one-way street and carry it with you to show cab drivers. Of course, as this hotel gets better known, it may be less of a problem.
Also, watch out for the plumbing..the showers are beautifully tiled, and glass door exquisitely etched..but it is poorly designed and prone to flooding. Don't put any thing on the floor while you shower and watch while you do, to see if your shower is filling up and spilling over. Floor should have been recessed and isn't.
Another thing to be aware of is that the hotel has no central heating. They provide electric blankets and on one occasion a warmed brick in the bed. There is also a heater in the bistro. This will not be a concern in the warmer months.
I stayed here five nights overall..and would stay there again. It is an experience. My own house seemed dreary on return
