“Great hotel in Quito”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2011

I stayed for 5 nights at Mercure hotel in Quito, my stay has been excellent there. In fact they upgraded me to a suite on the last floor and the hardest part was to get out of that fantastic room to visit Quito. Very clean room, with a great bed, plenty of movie channels and amazing views from the balcony. The staff was very nice and helpful and the buffet breakfast was great.

OK this Mercure is not 5 star by any standards. But we had a comfortable large bedroom and it is reasonably priced and the hotel staff could not have been more helpful.

We were in Quito for three nights (too short a time) as we were touring through the West of South America. The hotel was a base nothing more as we had many things to see and do. It provided a comfortable big bed with crisp new linen, it had free wi-fi in the bedrooms and satallite TV (I believe). the shower and bathroom were spotless. The view from our room was great over the city and mountains.

The breakfast was basic and a weak link in the hotels offering tothis tourist.

It is located on Avenida Rio Amazonas and on Sunday this road becomes a cycle way and party central. very safe, friendly and great fun. It is located near some great restaurants and is close to Plaza Fosch with it's bars and nightlife.

In summary I would stay there again, but would recommend they beef up the breakfast to something more substantial. Likewise the hotel bar and restaurant need to lift their game.

Upgraded to one up from a standard room but initially overlooking the Amazonas Avenue which was very noisy so requested another room on the other side of the corridor which was nice and quiet. The hotel wasn't that modern but the bedroom and sitting room were nicely furnished. What was lacking was any heating or aircon which was explained away by Quito's climate which is just about the same all year. However, heaters are available on request. The hotel is well located for the Marascal entertainment and restaurant district which was just a few blocks away and we walked along fairly well-lit and well-policed streets but a taxi is advised if you are nervous about security. There's a big market with similar souvenir goods to Otavalo a few blocks the other way in the street parallel to Amazonas behind the hotel and some great stalls selling clothing and artwork in the park at the end of Amazonas near the Hilton. A cab to the old city is about US$5 (insist on them using their meter if they have one) and about 10-15 mins depending on traffic so easy sight-seeing or dining option. Breakfast in the Mercure was good and all the staff in this hotel are absolutely wonderful and helpful. The hotel is about 20 mins from the downtown airport and a US$5-6 cab fare. They are happy to hold your bags for you if you are going off to the Amazon rainforest or the Galapagos - in fact anything they can do for you is not too much trouble. Service is what makes the Mercure stand out from some other so called better hotels. Congrats to the management for running such a tight and happy ship.

A very nice hotel

We stayed 2 nights at the beginning and 2 nights at the end of the Ecuador portion of an Ecuador/Galapagos Tour.

For our first stay, we had what I imagine was a standard room: single room, no balcony. On our final stay we were in a suite with a balcony, which was very nice.

Both rooms were nice, clean, and with a good bathroom/shower, TV, safe, etc. The suite had a small kitchenette.

However, neither room had A/C so we left a window open at night to eliminate stuffiness. Unfortunately once was on a Saturday night, when Quito is exceptionally noisy. But it was not a big problem. The hotel does advertise AC but we were there in late Jan and I believe it had been turned off. There were AC ducts but to my knowledge there was no thermostat in either room.

The staff was friendly and eager to please. However they were poorly organized. Each had limited responsibilities and didn't seem to know things outside their own responsibilities. One gets passed on to other staff members (or one may have to seek out the appropriate staff member) until the problem is eventually resolved. The in-room safe had the incorrect instructions. It took the maintenance man to figure this out. The TV remote had dead batteries. Once again, it took the maintenance man to replace them.

Hotel security was very good. Felt safe to walk around the area during the day. Many small shops and sandwich cafes nearby. Also, nearby was Ejido Park were local handicrafts are sold on Saturdays
We felt it was unsafe to venture out in the evenings. We ate dinners at the hotel restaurant. Better restaurants blocks away, best to take a cab.

This was my first trip to Quito, and got to this hotel for having stayed at other Accor hotels in other places. Was not dissappointed. Large suites, comfortable, very good sleep quality, good sound and temp proof windows, working area, table, sofas, very nice ones. Located over Amazonas avenue, very easy to get transportation (taxis or even buses or trolley buses).
Breakfast is reasonable, with good variety of food, natural juices, bread and fruits.
Rooms and bathrooms are clean, well kept. The hotel has nice views to most of the city. Is big, but not to the point of getting over crowded.
Internet works well and fast. Room service is fast and prices are reasonable.
If I would ever come back for business to Quito, this is my place!

We spent four nights at the Mercure, two on either side of a trip to Galapagos. The location is in a busy downtown area but it's amazingly quiet in the rooms. A few good places to shop right by the hotel such as the Indian Market, reasonably priced local leather and wool products ... my partner even got a pair of boots that the shop owner sized custom for her. The suite room had lots of space for all our stuff, wifi and a nice table to work on downloading photos and checking email. Breakfast was included in our package and it included plenty of choices - hot, cold, fruit, juices, coffee and teas. There is an attached casino which we did not visit. The location is about 45 minutes from the airport depending on traffic. So overall it was a perfect place to stage before the Galapagos trip and around our two day excursion to Bellavista Cloud Forest Lodge. For local excursions contact Galapagos Travel in Quito and ask for Tania!

We reserved a room on the 10th floor to avoid street noise, but the next day changed to the 2nd floor because there were some very loud renovations happening on the ninth floor (during the day). Both rooms were very comfortable and clean, and with a nice selection of toiletries. We have a 9-month-old baby for whom the hotel provided a crib. We weren't bothered by street noise, but we're used to it!

The suite that we first got on the 10th floor had two rooms separated by a door (which worked great for us with the baby.) When we were transferred to the 2nd floor, the suite was completely open but the bathroom was larger and the room had a more modern decor. So judging by appearances, I think most people would prefer the suites on the lower floors.

I was a little surprised by the lack of air conditioning- we are used to sleeping in a very cool room so it was little tough to get to sleep. It might sound strange that I'm complaining of it being hot in Quito, but it's true!

The service was very good (by Ecuadorian standards). The staff was friendly and helpful and made us feel welcome. We requested airport pick-up and late check out, and recieved both.
